Beginning with the year 2006, this series of books with Harmattan has successively analyzed representative samples of the English-language world press covering major national and international conflicts. Such analysis is often called “parapolitics” or the real use of power as opposed to the declared use of power. When you analyze all press reports, conspiracy theories, “fake news” and good old fashion propaganda can be quickly and easily eliminated. Here, we use the method of co-occurrence of key words in texts to form statistically consistent clusters of key words that identify texts associated with specific topics. We then graphically compare these clusters according to their centrality – “everybody’s talking about it” – and density – “it’s tighter, closer organized and more isolated”. The method also allows you to follow these clusters and their texts over time to see if they disappear or become more central or more dense. And there are surprises at every turn. Obama and Trump, in a major instance early in their mandates, experienced almost the same unrecognized political failure. The 2016 presidential campaign started as an opposition between the Democratic establishment (the DNC) and the Republican establishment (the GOP), but that soon turned into a double match between Trump and the GOP, and between Sanders and the DNC. And the Russian, who were already there, applied leverage with the known results.

Karl M. van Meter is an American-French citizen with four university degrees from the US, the UK and France. As a mathematician and research sociologist, he has published widely in French and in English. He is the founding editor of the bilingual quarterly scientific journal, the “Bulletin of Sociological Methodology / Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique”, or “BMS”, once published by Harmattan.

Trump Talks of Pardon for Manafort and Escalates Attacks on Russia Inquiry

The great unraveling – The Mueller investigation is complex, but the core question is simple: Were Trump or his associates involved in the conspiracy to hack Clinton emails and distribute them in the days before the 2016 election?

NBC News obtained a draft document detailing what Robert Mueller knows about Jerome Corsi, the birther conspiracy theorist

The email correspondence establishes that there was a line of communication from Trump’s inner circle to Assange and Wikileaks and it was used to tell the Trump team about Wikileaks’ plans in advance

But Mueller has evidence that Corsi tried to cover his tracks. From the draft document:

Corsi goes on the attack – Corsi has hired attorney Larry Klayman, a right-wing operative, to file a criminal complaint against Mueller for “prosecutorial misconduct”

Trump comes full circle – Trump rose to political prominence in 2011 when he championed Corsi’s theory that Obama’s birth certificate is fake

THE LENGTHIEST 16-30 NOVEMBER 2018 ENTRIES

18 NOVEMBER 2018

**America Is Blaming Pregnant Women for Their Own Deaths /NYT What is it like to face dying during childbirth in the richest country in the world in the 21st century in Chicago. The doctors were “more interested in protocols than people,” she said. On that day, she was surprised to learn that her amniotic fluid was low, though the baby’s vital signs remained strong. The doctor informed Thea that she’d need to be induced right away. Thea questioned this directive, asking about the success rates for induction and whether she should consider a cesarean section instead. The doctor said she had no choice. She then asked if she could go home to get her overnight bag. She was told, she said, that if she left she could be “arrested for endangering the life of a child.” Alabama voters have just approved a constitutional amendment recognizing “fetal personhood,” a measure that could be used to further curtail the rights of pregnant women in favor of the safety of fetuses. Voters in Alabama and West Virginia have approved amendments to their respective state constitutions that seek to immediately ban abortion if Roe V. Wade—the landmark 1973 decision that made abortion legal nationwide—is ever overturned by the Supreme Court. [and Ohio is considering a “heart-beat” definition of fetal life]

20 NOVEMBER 2018

**An extraordinary 24 hours [reactions to Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith’s “public hanging” statement] /Popular Information I’m writing to let you know about the extraordinary impact Popular Information has had on national politics in the last 24 hours. Yesterday morning, I reported on a new FEC filing by Mississippi Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, who has refused to apologize for saying she’d attend a “public hanging.” The filing revealed recent donations to Hyde-Smith from major corporations including Walmart ($2000), Union Pacific ($5000), and Boston Scientific ($2500). This information spread rapidly on social media. Then things started to happen. On Monday at 4 PM, Union Pacific, the multi-billion dollar railroad company, said that it did not condone Hyde-Smith’s “divisive statements” and will “request a refund of our contribution.” On Monday at 5 PM, Boston Scientific, the multi-billion dollar manufacturer, said Hyde-Smith’s comments “are not aligned with our company’s core values” and the company has “requested a refund.” •On Tuesday at 9 AM, Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer, said Hyde-Smith’s remarks “do not reflect the values of our company and associates” and the company is “withdrawing our support and requesting a refund of all campaign donations.” The news comes at a critical time in Hyde-Smith’s runoff election against Democrat Mike Espy. The New York Times reports the race is tightening, there is a debate tonight, and election day is in one week.

*Goodbye, Paul Ryan /Progress Report Soon, the reign of Speaker Ryan will end, bringing a sigh of relief to every person in America who cares about Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Ryan’s retirement is imminent, and there will be many analyses of his time as a Congressman, a vice presidential nominee, and Speaker of the House. We at CAP Action will always remember Paul Ryan for this: •Speaker Paul Ryan likes to chastise President Trump’s most disgusting moments and then keep quietly voting in line with him 95.2% of the time. Although he eventually gave up on chastising too. •Ryan embraced Trump as the leader of the Republican party because Trump ensured that Ryan’s lifelong dream would come true: a massive tax cut for the wealthy to be paid for by slashing Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security for those who need it most. •After years of peddling privatization schemes for everything from Social Security to Medicare to the VA, all in the name of “the deficit,” he leaves behind mind-boggling deficits of his own making. What’s more, this very tax bill that was supposed to be a triumph for Republicans failed House Republicans in the midterms. Rather than working in the best interest of their constituents or members of their party, Republicans threw their most vulnerable House members to the wolves in order to please big donors—all under the leadership of Paul Ryan and Sen. Mitch McConnell. Ronald Brownstein summed it up well in The Atlantic: “Paul Ryan, who had been among the most openly skeptical of Trump during the 2016 election, sublimated any private doubts to a posture of public deference and a policy of legislative cooperation. Now Ryan leaves Washington as the architect of the GOP’s biggest loss of House seats in any election since Watergate.”

23 NOVEMBER 2018

*Corporations are sick of Cindy Hyde-Smith /Popular Information On Monday morning, I reported on a new FEC filing by Mississippi Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, who said she’d attend a “public hanging.” The filing revealed recent donations to Hyde-Smith from major corporations including Walmart ($2000), Union Pacific ($5000), Leidos ($5000) and Boston Scientific ($2500). On Monday at 4 PM, Union Pacific, the multi-billion dollar railroad company, said that it did not condone Hyde-Smith’s “divisive statements” and will “request a refund of our contribution.” On Monday at 5 PM, Boston Scientific, the multi-billion dollar manufacturer, said Hyde-Smith’s comments “are not aligned with our company’s core values” and the company has “requested a refund.” On Tuesday at 9 AM, Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer, said Hyde-Smith’s remarks “do not reflect the values of our company and associates” and the company is “withdrawing our support and requesting a refund of all campaign donations.” Also on Tuesday, Leidos announced it would ask for a refund of its $5000 contribution. Later Tuesday, three major corporations who donated in the months before Hyde-Smith’s remarks — AT&T, Pfizer, and Amgen — said they would ask for their donations to Hyde-Smith to be returned. The move by companies in the medical industry is particularly notable since Hyde-Smith sits on “the Senate Appropriations subcommittee that oversees the Food and Drug Administration.” Hyde-Smith faces Democrat Mike Espy in a runoff election on November 27.

**Research predicted this wave of right-wing domestic terrorism – Republicans tanked the report /ThinkProgress Last year, a white-nationalist army veteran was charged with second-degree murder after he drove a car into a group of nonviolent protesters in Charlottesville, Va., killing one and injuring 19. Earlier this month, a far-right wing army veteran shot and killed two people at a Tallahassee, Fla. yoga studio. According to a new report published Sunday by the Washington Post, the victims in Florida were among at least 20 people who have been killed so far this year in the United States in suspected right-wing attacks (compared to “just one fatal attack in 2018 that may have been motivated by left-wing ideologies.”) This comes amid an “up tick in right-wing terrorism,” as the report puts it. The FBI has documented this phenomenon as an increase in hate crimes. In April 2009, the Obama administration’s Department of Homeland Security released a report warning this could happen. Naturally, conservatives went ballistic.

28 NOVEMBER 2018

**Between the actions of former Trump campaign adviser Roger Stone and former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, Special Counsel Robert Mueller has the biggest proof yet of collusion and obstruction of justice /Progress Report The case for collusion: Roger Stone Mueller allegedly has evidence that Roger Stone directed his associate, Jerome Corsi, to communicate with WikiLeaks about the hacked Clinton campaign emails prior to their release, then funnel the information back to Stone and on to the Trump campaign. The stolen emails were hacked by Russia in the first place. The kicker? The Trump campaign knew. The case for obstruction: Paul Manafort Manafort allegedly lied to federal investigators after pleading guilty and signing a plea deal to cooperate. Reports show that Manafort’s attorneys briefed Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, on the case. If Manafort disclosed any personal information or there was any discussion of a pardon, “some legal experts believe that the feeding of information by Manafort’s lawyers to the Trump team could amount to obstruction of justice or witness tampering”— especially since Trump continues to corruptly dangle a pardon in front of Manafort. We’ll know soon; Trump’s attorneys just submitted the president’s written responses to the Mueller probe. We wouldn’t be surprised if his story aligns nicely with Manafort’s.

30 NOVEMBER 2018

*Linda Fairstein’s role in railroading the Central Park 5 escaped everyone’s attention — until now /ThinkProgress Linda Fairstein is the author of 20 novels about Alexandra Cooper, a fictional Manhattan prosecutor inspired by Fairstein’s real experiences as the chief of the Manhattan district attorney’s office’s sex crimes unit. Fairstein also oversaw the prosecution of the young teenage boys who would become known to all the world as the Central Park Five: the black and Hispanic children who were wrongly convicted in a grisly 1989 rape case. It was the former achievement that, in the eyes of the Mystery Writers of America (MWA), merited one of the highest honors her genre has to offer: The prize of Grand Master at the Edgar Awards. It was the latter — not only her involvement at the time of the prosecution, but her repeated insistence that the confessions of the boys were not coerced and her failure to apologize for her role in sending five innocent children to prison — that prompted several mystery writers, including last year’s Best Novel winner, to publicly call for the MWA to rescind Fairstein’s award.

Intelligence, Secrecy & Power, N. 729, 15 November 2018

THE LENGTHIEST 1-15 NOVEMBER 2018 ENTRIES

7 NOVEMBER 2018

The big storylines after last night’s elections /ThinkProgress The dust has nearly settled after last night’s midterm elections, and Democrats are back in control of the House of Representatives after making huge gains across the country. Several candidates will make history when they’re sworn into office in January, including the first two Muslim women, the first two Native American lawmakers, and a record number of women overall. A handful of Donald Trump’s biggest allies in the House are now unemployed. And even some Republican winners might have a tough time staying in their jobs (and out of prison) for the next two years. But Congress isn’t the only place where progressives made big gains. Democrats gained control of the governor’s mansion in states like Michigan, Wisconsin (bye, Scott Walker!), Nevada, and even Kansas, while ballot measures on the minimum wage, voting rights for felons, non-discrimination protections for the transgender community, and legalized marijuana passed with overwhelming support in some unlikely places. Here’s everything that went down on Election Night 2018.

*WHAT DEMOCRATS WON /Progress Report As you can tell from President Trump’s hissy fit this afternoon, Democrats made significant gains in yesterday’s midterm elections. Here are just a few key victories: Women won last night. A record number of women will serve in the US House next year. There were multiple “firsts” for female elected officials, including the first Muslim women and first Native American women elected to the US Congress. Both Massachusetts and Connecticut elected their respective states’ first black female representatives. Congress – Democrats took control of the House of Representatives, ending the era of total Republican control and unchecked corruption—not a moment too soon. Nearly 30 House seats flipped from Republican to Democratic control (and more are expected to flip). Governorships/State Legislatures 7 governorships flipped from red to blue. Democrats took control of 7 state legislative chambers. At least 350 state legislative seats flipped to Democratic control. Ballot Initiatives 3 red states voted to expand Medicaid, bringing health care access to an additional 300,000 Americans. In a major victory, Florida’s Amendment 4 passed last night. It will restore voting rights to people with prior felony convictions. In Massachusetts, voters upheld nondiscrimination protections for transgender people in public spaces. 2 states voted to raise the minimum wage (AR, MO). Ballot measures passed in ME, MD, MT, NJ, NM, GA, and RI will culminate in nearly $900 million in education funding. Multiple states passed anti-corruption measures around lobbying, ethics, and campaign finance.

8 NOVEMBER 2018

**The Wednesday afternoon massacre – Just hours after the polls closed, President Trump fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions /Popular Information Trump has had it in for Sessions ever since March 2017, when Sessions recused himself from the Russia investigation. That decision, in turn, led to the appointment of Robert Mueller. Trump’s move, which has been telegraphed for months, is an apparent effort to curtail Mueller’s investigation just as it reaches a critical stage. Mueller is expected to either issue additional indictments or produce a report, which the Justice Department will have to decide whether or not to make public. Trump announced that Sessions would be replaced, on a temporary basis, by Matthew G. Whitaker, Sessions’ chief of staff. According to Bloomberg, Trump has removed Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein from his role overseeing Mueller’s investigation. Whitaker is now in charge. If that report is accurate, Whitaker will be able to block Mueller from issuing any indictments Whitaker believes are outside Mueller’s purview. The move is reminiscent of the Saturday Night Massacre, when President Richard Nixon ordered Attorney General Elliott Richardson to fire special prosecutor Archibald Cox. Richardson refused and resigned. Then Nixon issued the same directive to Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus, who also refused and resigned. In the end, Solicitor General Robert Bork fired Cox.

THE 7 WORST REPUBLICAN LOSERS [Gov. Scott Walker (WI), Secretary of State Kris Kobach (KS), Sen. Dean Heller (NV), Rep. Jason Lewis (MN-02), Rep. John Faso (NY-19), Rep. Dave Brat (VA-07), Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (CA-48)] /Progress Report
Across the country, GOP candidates ran on Trump’s messages of dishonesty, hatred, division, and fear. For some, their records and lies caught up with them. We learned that voters really don’t enjoy being lied to—and they really don’t like it when you try to rip away their health care. Here are seven of the GOP’s worst midterm losers: Gov. Scott Walker (WI) Goodbye, (almost former) Governor Scott Walker. No one will miss you. There’s been no bigger enemy of unions, teachers, and working people than Walker. Walker repeatedly lied about protecting people with pre-existing conditions and is currently suing to rip those protections away from Wisconsinites. Secretary of State Kris Kobach (KS) Kobach lost his bid for Kansas governor. He’s a nationally-renowned architect of racist policies of all kinds. Best known as the champion of Trump’s absurd voter fraud narrative, Kobach headed up last year’s sham voter fraud commission. Sen. Dean Heller (NV) Senator Dean Heller was unseated by NV Rep. Jacky Rosen. After his millionaire donors threatened him, Heller flip-flopped from his phony emotional stand against ACA repeal and abandoned Nevadans by voting for it anyway. Rep. Jason Lewis (MN-02) Lewis lost to businesswoman Angie Craig. Lewis is a documented homophobe and racist. He also lamented not being able to call women “sluts” anymore. Rep. John Faso (NY-19) Faso was defeated by Antonio Delgado, against whom Faso repeatedly ran racist ads. Faso has been publicly called out for breaking promises to his constituents, specifically promises not to vote to repeal the ACA. Rep. Dave Brat (VA-07) Brat lost to former CIA operative Abigail Spanberger, whom he disgustingly tried to tie to terrorism (and who gave one of the great debate closing statements of the cycle). He is yet another GOPer who lied about protecting pre-existing conditions, claimed that the #GOPTaxScam was fully paid for, and told inmates living with addiction that he’s been having a worse time than them. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (CA-48) Though the race hasn’t officially been called, it’s not looking good for Dana Rohrabacher, who was acting like a Putin asset before Trump made it cool. The GOP Congressman voted 9 times to overturn protections for people with pre-existing conditions—and then lied directly to his constituents’ faces.

*TRUMP’S ILLEGAL ATTORNEY GENERAL – Here’s the deal: President Trump’s appointment of Matt Whitaker as acting attorney general is unconstitutional /Progress Report Attorney General is a Senate-confirmed position requiring the “advice and consent” of the Senate on each nominee. It’s necessary, especially in a presidency full of corruption and nepotism, to put a check on a president’s ability to appoint his cronies to the nation’s highest law enforcement positions. Matt Whitaker was never confirmed for the role, or any other role under Trump where Trump could use a special law to appoint him, and likely wouldn’t be were he to be formally nominated now (which Trump wisely doesn’t appear to be planning to do). Beyond unconstitutionality, Whitaker is supremely unqualified to be acting attorney general of the United States. His lone real qualification appears to be that he is an outspoken opponent of the Mueller investigation that he will now be overseeing. Not only did Trump appoint a walking manifestation of obstruction of justice, he then stood in front of the media and claimed that he doesn’t even know Whitaker. That’s funny, considering Trump told his friends at Fox & Friends the opposite in October: “I can tell you Matt Whitaker is a great guy. I know Matt Whitaker.”

**The case to expel white supremacist Steve King from Congress /ThinkProgress Rep. Steve King (R-IA) should be expelled from Congress. The noted white supremacist, who also happens to be a Republican congressman, makes no effort to hide his racism. In addition to his very long history of offensive conduct, King actively follows Twitter accounts “belonging to unabashed white supremacists, including Blair Cottrell, a violent Australian activist who’s called for hanging a picture of Adolf Hitler in every classroom; Stefan Molyneux, a Canadian alt-right vlogger who thinks whites are more intelligent than blacks; and an anonymous Twitter user (with only 334 followers) using the handle @DiezNewAge, who regularly tweets out anti-Semitic and anti-black messages,” according to HuffPost. With Donald Trump sitting in the White House, King’s re-election to a ninth term in Congress last week is just further proof that racism is now a feature of the Republican party rather than a bug. Democrats, with their new House majority, could move to expel arguably the most vile American politician from Congress, and give the GOP an opportunity to save some dignity in the process.

*Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) [“willing to attend a lynching”] received a $5000 contribution from Google on November 13 /Popular Information Google corporate responsibility – A dull campaign finance report quietly filed on Tuesday by the campaign of Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) [“willing to attend a lynching”} reveals a different side of the company. According to the document, first reported in Popular Information, Hyde-Smith received a $5000 contribution from Google on November 13. Google regularly donates money to members of both parties. But two weeks prior, Hyde-Smith stood in front of a small crowd on a sunny day in Tupelo, Mississippi and “joked” about her willingness to attend a lynching. “If he invited me to a public hanging, I’d be on the front row,” Hyde-Smith said, referring to a cattle rancher who asked her to speak at the event. The crowd laughed and applauded. Her remarks went unnoticed. Then, on November 11, a video of Hyde-Smith’s comment was posted on Twitter. Hyde-Smith continued to downplay the incident, refusing to apologize and insisting her quip on lynchings did not have any “negative connotation.” In a statement to Popular Information, Google claimed it donated to Hyde-Smith on November 2, before anyone was aware of her lynching comments. This contribution was made on November 2nd before Senator Hyde-Smith’s remarks became public on November 11th. While we support candidates who promote pro-growth policies for business and technology, we do not condone these remarks and would not have made such a contribution had we known about them. There are a couple of issues with Google’s statement. Within 20 days of an election, federal regulations require any contribution of $1000 or more to be reported within 48 hours. That means if Hyde-Smith really received Google’s contribution on November 2, the Hyde-Smith campaign filed a false FEC report.
