THE LENGTHIEST 15-30 JUNE 2019 ENTRIES

16 JUNE 2019

Sri Lanka – The Tawhid Jamaat group was reportedly financed by Sri Lankan intelligence, according to a former governor /Renseignor – Vatican Radio – 13-06-2019 In Sri Lanka a special parliamentary committee is investigating security loopholes that led to the attacks causing the death of more than 250 people on 21 April 2019. An former governor accused the intelligence services of having financed the Tawhid Jamaat national Islamist terror group which claimed responsibility for the attacks: “We know that the Ministry of Defense has funded the Tawhid Jamaat”. Azath Salley, the former governor of the western province of Sri Lanka said he has known for a long time that the terrorist organization responsible for the 21 April 21 attacks was protected by the intelligence services. “I informed the President and the Ministry of Defense three times, but nothing was done”, added the senior official before the commission of the parliamentary committee, whose report we have been able to consult. He explained that like many other members of the Muslim community before him, he had asked the authorities to arrest the heads of this violent Islamist group but that these warnings had been ignored. According to him, this funding lasted for several years and was intended to help spy on various radical groups. The Sri Lankan president has been regularly accused of ignoring warnings from his intelligence services concerning Tawhid Jamaat and has done everything possible to prevent this parliamentary commission from investigating these attacks. The president has even fired the head of the intelligence services after the latter declared that the president was aware of these risks of such attacks.

These rainbow flag-waiving corporations donated millions to anti-gay members of Congress [AT&T, UPS, Comcast, Home Depot, General Electric, FedEx, UBS, Verizon & Pfizer] /Popular Information Popular Information has identified nine rainbow flag-waiving corporations that gave $1 million or more to anti-gay politicians in the last election cycle. Deconstructing corporate pride – The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the most prominent organization dedicated to LGBTQ rights, produces a “Corporate Equality Index.” In 2019, 572 companies earned a perfect score. HRC says these companies are the “Best Places to Work for LGBTQ Equality.” HRC touts these companies not only for strong internal policies for LGBTQ employees but also their public advocacy for LGBTQ rights. Popular Information identified nine corporations that received a perfect score from HRC but donated $1 million or more in the last election cycle to politicians that received a zero on the HRC Congressional scorecard. The donations were all from corporate PACs to politicians or their leadership PACs. AT&T donated $2,755,000 to 193 anti-gay politicians – UPS donated $2,366,122 to 159 anti-gay politicians – Comcast donated $2,116,500 to 154 anti-gay politicians – Home Depot donated $1,825,500 to 111 anti-gay politicians – General Electric donated $1,380,500 to 97 anti-gay politicians – FedEx donated $1,261,500 to 75 anti-gay politicians – UBS donated $1,094,750 to 72 anti-gay politicians – Verizon donated $1,022,803 to 74 anti-gay politicians – Pfizer donated $959,263 to 52 anti-gay politicians.

Media outlets, lawmakers conveniently forget that US violated the Iran nuclear deal first /ThinkProgress As the Trump administration works to drum up support for military action against Iran, many GOP lawmakers and mainstream media outlets have predictably and conveniently fallen in line, accepting the narrative that Iran is hell-bent on building nuclear weapons and destroying the Middle East. Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated in the days since the Trump administration blamed Iran for an attack on two tankers in the Gulf of Oman last week, mere hours after the investigation into the attack began. In the days that followed, the United States has presented little evidence — beyond images, mine fragments, and a magnet — to prove Iran’s alleged role in the attack. The US Navy, for its part, has stopped short of directly blaming Iran, which denies responsibility for the attacks. Last Friday, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an independent investigation into the matter, adding that “it is very important to know the truth. “Imagine that. Truth being important.

Infowars host, still verified on Twitter, calls for lynching of Obama /Popular Information Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has said that he’s focused on improving “the collective health, openness, and civility of public conversation” on Twitter. It’s a sentiment echoed by other social media companies. In a June 5 statement, YouTube said it was its responsibility to “prevent our platform from being used to incite hatred, harassment, discrimination and violence,” They have a long way to go. Conspiracy website InfoWars and its founder Alex Jones were banned by Youtube in August 2018. Twitter booted InfoWars and Jones the next month. Yesterday, Owen Shroyer, who hosts an InfoWars show called “War Room,” called for the lynching of former President Barack Obama. On Wednesday afternoon, a video of Shroyer’s show was available on YouTube. Although Shroyer is banned from YouTube, the video of the InfoWars show was simply uploaded by another user. YouTube does not appear to have systems in place that prevent InfoWars content from being uploaded. After Popular Information alerted YouTube to the video, the company removed the video and the account that uploaded it. YouTube told Popular Information that any channel that uploads InfoWars content (without commentary or context) will be removed. But even after Popular Information contacted YouTube, multiple copies of Shroyer’s Tuesday show, when he called for Obama to be lynched, remained on the service. Shroyer is not banned from Twitter. He has a verified account. On Tuesday, Shroyer used his Twitter account to promote the livestream of the show where he called for Obama to be lynched. As evident from those tweets, Shroyer also uses his account as a way of promoting Jones and Infowars on Twitter. Shroyer has used his account to circumvent Twitter’s InfoWars ban. But he is not alone. There is a network of accounts, with ties to Jones and InfoWars, that promote InfoWars content on Twitter.

Anti-government militias [Oregon 3 Percenters] say they will protect Republican lawmaker [Brian Boquist] who threatened police /ThinkProgress Anti-government militias have vowed to protect an Oregon GOP lawmaker who threatened to shoot state police trying to bring him back to the capitol to pass legislation this week. On Thursday, Republican state senators walked out of session at the Oregon state capitol over disagreements on a cap and trade climate bill. Later that day, 11 of them failed to appear for a roll call on the Senate floor, which prompted Gov. Kate Brown (D) to order the state police to bring them in to finish voting on the bill. Boquist’s comments grabbed the attention of a number of militia groups in the Pacific Northwest. A member of the Oregon 3 Percenters — a militia group whose members have vowed to combat what they perceive as constitutional infringement — said they would act as the senators’ de-facto bodyguards against the state police. In Idaho, where some of the lawmakers have supposedly fled, the state’s 3 Percenters group was similarly willing to defend the Republicans as well, posting threatening memes on its Facebook page. “This is what the start of a civil war looks like,” the group wrote in one post.

24 JUNE 2019

Border vigilante [Jim Benvie of United Constitutional Patriots] arrested for impersonating Border Patrol agent /ThinkProgress Jim Benvie is the second member tied to the group United Constitutional Patriots to be arrested. United Constitutional Patriots New Mexico Border Ops militia team member Jim Benvie, 43, from Minnesota, looks on near the US-Mexico border wall in Anapra, New Mexico on March 20, 2019. – The militia members say they will patrol the US-Mexico border near Mt. Christo Rey, “Until the wall is built.” Jim Benvie, who was part of the United Constitutional Patriots (UCP) before splintering off in May to form the Guardian Patriots, was arrested in Oklahoma on two counts of impersonating an officer or an employee of the United States, authorities announced on Saturday. The alleged incidents reportedly occurred in mid-April, around the time that UCP began to receive national attention of their unauthorized migrant apprehension. He will travel to New Mexico to face charges. Benvie, who is from Minnesota, is also facing charges in Oklahoma for running a child cancer charity scam. As the Daily Beast reported, Benvie is accused of using the photos and story from 11-year-old cancer survivor Ryan Cremeens to collect money in his name, which he allegedly then pocketed for himself. Benvie’s arrest is the latest setback for UCP-affiliated “patriots.” In April, the group’s leader Larry Hopkins (otherwise known as Johnny Horton Jr., Scott Alan Curtis, and “Striker”) was charged for unlawful possession of weapons and ammunition. Those charges stem from a 2017 FBI investigation in which agents visited Hopkins over his claim to be planning the assassination of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and George Soros. Upon visiting Hopkins, agents noted that he had a number of firearms in his possession despite having prior criminal convictions. This opens the question of why the FBI didn’t arrest him then, since he had a string of previous felonies — including, in a similar vein to Benvie’s case, one of impersonating a peace officer in Oregon in 2006.

25 JUNE 2019

The Middle East: Barrelling towards a nuclear and ballistic missiles arms race /James M. Dorsey The race is being aided and abetted by a US policy that views the region through the dual prism of the need to stop in its tracks an aggressive, expansionary, and destabilizing Islamic republic that seeks to dominate and as a lucrative market for the US defense and nuclear industry. The race is further enabled by the inability or unwillingness of other major powers – Europe, Russia and China – to counter crippling US sanctions against Iran in ways that would ensure that Tehran maintains an interest in adhering to the 2015 international agreement that curbed the Iranian nuclear program despite last year’s US withdrawal from the deal. With the Middle East teetering on the brink of a military confrontation, Iran has vowed to next month start breaching the agreement if the international community, and particularly Europe, fails to shield it against US sanctions. Former International Atomic Energy Agency (IEA) deputy director general Olli Heinonen, a hard-liner when it comes to Iran, asserted recently during a visit to Israel that Iran would need six to eight months to enrich uranium in the quantity and quality required to produce a nuclear bomb. US and Chinese willingness to lower safeguards in their nuclear dealings with Saudi Arabia further fuel Iranian doubts about the value of the nuclear agreement and potentially open the door to a nuclear arms race. Europe has so far unsuccessfully sought to put in place an effective mechanism that would allow European and potentially non-European companies that do business with Iran to circumvent US sanctions unscathed. As the United States prepared to announce new sanctions, Russia said it would help Iran with oil exports and its banking sector if the European mechanism failed to get off the ground but offered no details.

Virginia state Sen. Bill DeSteph [a licensed arms dealer] has a conflict of interest he has yet to disclose [Gun control legislation] /ThinkProgress Should the licensed arms dealer have a say in upcoming gun control session? Virginia lawmakers are set to convene on July 9 for a special session, with the goal of hammering out better gun policy. The decision arises out of Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s (D) desire for lawmakers to contend with the aftermath of a recent, tragic Virginia Beach workplace shooting in which 12 people were killed by a former colleague. In addition to the resistance that some Republican lawmakers have exerted in the wake of Northam’s request, this special session could potentially be further complicated by one lawmaker’s potential conflict of interest. Specifically, state Sen. Bill DeSteph (R). DeSteph, who took office in 2014 and whose district includes the Virginia Beach area, holds a license to sell firearms. The matter raises questions about whether or not DeSteph should recuse himself from any key votes taken in this proposed special session, about a mass shooting that happened in the lawmaker’s own district. There is every possibility that matters decided on during this special session might impact DeSteph’s business concern, even if it has been dormant.

27 JUNE 2019

The Supreme Court released two decisions on voting rights today, one a temporary reprieve from the racism of Trump’s administration, the other a body blow to democracy /Progress Report Census citizenship question: The justices temporarily struck down the Trump administration’s racist citizenship question on the 2020 census, which was designed to target immigrants and suppress the counting of people of color, distorting virtually everything the federal government does. This is of course just one plank in the widespread GOP attempts to corrupt our democracy for their own benefit. Partisan gerrymandering: In a 5-4 decision, the conservative justices of the Court ruled that federal courts cannot intervene to stop partisan gerrymandering—a major blow to ensuring that every American is represented equally. Republicans notoriously use gerrymandering to make it nearly impossible for many of them to be voted out of office, often by targeting minority voting rights. If you need proof, just take a look at the 2018 midterms. It is now up to Congress and state legislatures to enact new policies to end partisan gerrymandering.
