LENGTHIEST 1-15 FEBRUARY 2018 ENTRIES

1 FEBRUARY 2018

*Canceled Lorde Concert Prompts First Use of Israel’s Anti-Boycott Law/ NYT\ The lawsuit targets two women in New Zealand who wrote a letter urging the singer to call off a planned performance in Tel Aviv. A lawsuit filed in Israel seeks damages from two activists in New Zealand, blaming them for the singer Lorde’s decision to cancel a planned concert in Tel Aviv. It appears to be the first use of a controversial Israeli law against calling for boycotts of Israel or the territory it controls. The defendants — one of Palestinian descent, and the other Jewish — drew attention in December when they published an open letter to Lorde, a fellow New Zealander, which was one of many calls for her to reconsider a scheduled performance in Israel next summer. Days later, she called off the concert. The suit, filed on Tuesday, demands 45,000 Israeli shekels, or about $13,200, on behalf of three Israeli teenagers who had bought tickets for the concert. It demands payment not from the singer, but from the authors of the open letter, Nadia Abu-Shanab and Justine Sachs.

*Crisis in the Maldives – A geopolitical chess game – The outcome of a power struggle in the Maldives that has sparked declaration of an emergency, military control of parliament, and arrests of senior figures, is likely to shape the geopolitical designs of China, India, the United States and Saudi Arabia at a strategic interface of the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea/ James M. Dorsey\ The struggle between authoritarian president Abdulla Yameen and exiled former president and onetime political prisoner Mohamed Nasheed, a staunch critic of Chinese and Saudi interests, has a direct bearing on the future of the two countries’ significant investment that has already reshaped the archipelago’s social and political life. The struggle also involves Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, the politician who served longest as the country’s leader, Mr. Gayoom’s son-in-law, Mohamed Nadheem, and senior figures in the judiciary, including Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed. All were detained last week on charges of corruption and attempting to overthrow the government. Mr. Yameen, in what United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein dubbed an “all-out assault on democracy,” declared the state of emergency after the Supreme Court ordered the release from prison of opposition politicians and their retrial. The state emergency, gives the government sweeping powers to make arrests, search and seize property, and restrict freedom of assembly. The court ruling appeared to enhance Mr. Nasheed’s chances of challenging Mr. Yameen in elections scheduled for later this year by giving the opposition a majority in the country’s legislative assembly.

10 FEBRUARY 2018

*This Fake Clinic Network Receives State and Federal Funding to Teach Kids [abstinence-only] Shaming Sex-Ed Curriculum/ Rewire\ During the last two years, the organization was awarded nearly $900,000 to teach students to, among other things, question condom effectiveness and suggest that sex may cause “emotional and psychological problems.” It’s not the only one. Elizabeth’s New Life Center in Ohio has received federal and state funding for years while running a string of crisis pregnancy centers, or fake clinics, that attempt to trick those seeking abortion care into visiting their office. The US Department of Health and Human Services’ Family and Youth Services Bureau, an office within the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), awarded $442,019 in funding for fiscal year 2016 to Elizabeth’s New Life Center for “sexual risk avoidance” programs, a rebranding of abstinence-only sex education. – “Having sex before you are married is just like juggling machetes!” and “Sex before marriage will destroy all of your life’s dreams!”

14 FEBRUARY 2018

*Escort girl unwittingly helped prove Russian meddling in US elections – Aleksey Navalny investigated another case of corruption in Russia/ JamNews\ One of the high-ranking Russian officials – vice premier Sergey Prikhodko – spent several days in the company of Oleg Deripaska, the Russian oligarch, and several prostitutes. The story was told by Aleksey Navalny, one of the Russian opposition leaders, in his new video “Yachts, oligarchs, girls; sex-hunter against corruption” The 20 minutes long video (above) is not about the fun that took place aboard the yacht. It is a new investigation by Navalny`s Foundation Against Corruption. The new video is largely based on photos taken from the Instagram of one of the girls aboard the yacht and her book “Seducing a billionaire”. The author calling herself Nastya Rybka provides details of entertaining an oligarch and an official having business talks aboard the yacht. The men on the photos are Deripaska and Prikhodko. – `Graft’ clip may lead Russia to hit YouTube, Instagram – Laredo Morning Times

ADI January 2018 Strategic Diagram & Analysis

[Figures available at intelligence-adi@wanadoo.fr]

ADI – JANUARY 2018

Figure 1. Strategic Diagram for January 2018 based on ADI Material

The French Association for the Right to Information (“Association pour le Droit à l’Information” or ADI) publishes the fortnightly Intelligence, Secrecy & Power (ISP), available by subscription via the Internet. Summary versions are available free at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ intelligence -secrecy-power-adi/ or https://intelligenceadi.wordpress.com/.

The above Strategic Diagram is the result of a co-occurrence of key word analysis by the Calliope software system (https://www.calliope-textmining.com/) of the 1,794 entries included in the two January 2018 issues of ISP. The first or horizontal axis indicates “centrality” or the number of external ties (out-ties) between key words of each of the eight clusters in the figure. The second or vertical axis indicates the number of internal ties (in-ties) between key words of each cluster. For further details see: Mathilde de Saint Léger et Karl M. van Meter, “Cartographie du premier congrès de l’ASF avec la méthode des mots associés”, Bulletin de Méthodologie Sociologique / Bulletin of Sociological Methodology, 2005, n. 85; Karl M. van Meter and Mathilde de Saint Léger, World Politics and Parapolitics 2006 – Computer-assisted Text Analysis of International Media Headlines, L’Harmattan, 2009; Karl M. van Meter, 2009-2012, Obama’s First Term, Bush’s Legacy, Arab Spring and World Jihadism, L’Harmattan, 2016.

In this January 2018 analysis, we deleted the key word “Trump” because its dominant situation meant that there was only one cluster, which included everything and was therefore uninterruptible and explained nothing. In this Strategic Diagram, in terms on ties between different clusters, there are strong ties from “Russia” toward “Republican”, and weaker ties from “Russia” toward “UN”. “Immigration” has very strong ties toward “Republican” and weaker ones toward “Russia”. There are no noted external ties for “North Korea”, “Israel”, “Attack”, “Republican” and “Shooting” toward other clusters.

Below you will find the eight cluster diagrams depicting key words, internal ties and the relative strength of these ties.

ISP subscribers can contact us at intelligence-adi@wanadoo.fr if they would like more information or further details concerning this analysis.
