World Media – Synthesis Based on the Most Noteworthy Entries from 1 August 2017 to 15 August 2017

The major topics of the previous issue of “Intelligence, Secrecy & Power” (ISP, n. 698, 31 July 2017) were: US POLITICS (42X) GOP Health Care, Russia Sanctions, Trump Absolves Himself, Voter Fraud Panel; TRUMP (34X) Recertifies Iran, Brink of Disaster, Rebukes Sessions, Spicer Resigns, Endorses Police Brutality; WESTERN EUROPE (20X) Brexit “Worst Way”, Poland Reprimanded, Macron Slides; US COPS (19X) Justin Damond Killed, False Drug Tests, Wrong Address Killing, Being “Too Nice”; “THE RUSSIA THING” (18X) Trump Jr. Meeting, Self-Pardon, “I Did Not Collude”; ISRAEL/PALESTINE (14X) Shrine Violence, Metal Detectors, Possible Popular Revolt; US SPOOKS (14X) Anti-Trump, New FBI Boss, Whistleblowers Vital; MIDDLE EAST (13X) Women Troubles, Many Afghanistan Deaths, Pak PM Out; ASIA (10X) China Warns India, North Korea Missiles; US EXTREMISM (7X) White People’s “Burdens”, “Let Them Die”, Scaramucci In & Out, Forced Treatment; ECONOMICS (4X) Exxon & Russia, More Wells Fargo Misdeeds; LATIN AMERICA (3X) Venezuela Vote, Violence & CIA; EASTERN EUROPE (2X) Taliban, Putin’s Bet on Trump; TECH (2X) Inequality, Hackers in Las Vegas; and ENVIRONMENT (2X) Anti-Bee Study, Coming “Biological Annihilation”.

This issue’s leading topics are: US EXTREMISM (43X) Charlottesville Neo-Nazis Kill & Trump Excuses; US POLITICS (28X) Affirmative Action Targeted, GOP Disarray, North Korea Chaos; TRUMP (26X) Threats against North Korea, Mexico, Immigration, Congress, You Name It; ASIA (16X) UN Sanctions against North Korea, China-India Face Off, Hospital Deaths in India; “THE RUSSIA THING” (13X) Raid on Paul Manafort, Grand Jury Probe, Direct Implication; ECONOMICS (10X) More Wells Fargo Trouble, Problem with Trump; US COPS (9X) Police Misconduct, Find Another Job Is Easy, Police Inaction at Charlottesville; LATIN AMERICA (9X) Venezuela Turmoil without End; US SPOOKS (8X) FBI, CIA, Blackwater & Secret Service; WESTERN EUROPE (7X) Migrants, Ireland & Brexit; ENVIRONMENT (7X) Deadly Heat, Climate Change, Monsanto; ISRAEL/PALESTINE (5X) Apartheid Israel, Another Wall; AFRICA (5X) Kenya Election, Migrants & Burkina Faso Attack; MIDDLE EAST (4X) Turkey, Iran, Qatar & Yemen; TECH (3X) Babies & Voting Machines; and EASTERN EUROPE (2X) Russia.

If in preceding issues, “US Politics” and “Trump” have been dominant topics, and “US Extremism” a mid or lower tiers topic, the recent Neo-Nazi riot in Charlottesville, Virginia, and the killing Heather Heyer with Donald Trump’s responses has propelled “US Extremism” to the top subject of this issue of “ISP”, followed far behind by “US Politics”, “Trump” and the more typical array of subjects, even including the conflict between North Korea and the Trump administration. There is now very clear talk of Trump’s impeachment with counts of how many votes in Congress are still needed. The seriousness and reality of Trump impeachment seems to mean that this will continue to be a dominant topic until it is resolved.

LENGTHIEST 1-15 AUGUST 2017 ENTRIES

5 AUGUST 2017

*NY Times Jerusalem Bureau Chief Admits Palestinians Experience Apartheid – After Leaving the Bureau/ AlterNet\ To have done so in the Times would have been career suicide. The author of this even more incendiary statement is none other than Jodi Rudoren, the New York Times’ decidedly soft-on-Israel Jerusalem bureau chief from 2012 until her departure 18 months ago. Her apartheid comment is included in an interview with John Lyons, who himself served in Jerusalem for many years, in his case reporting for the Australian newspaper. In his new memoir, Balcony Over Jerusalem, Lyons describes not only the aggressive attacks he suffered at the hands of the Australian branch of the Israel lobby but allows other senior journalists to recount their own, similar experiences. In other words, Lyons shows that reporters covering Israel and Palestine are systematically targeted by Israel lobbyists in an attempt to pressure them and their papers into self-censorship. The goal is to skew the coverage to make Israel look much better than it would otherwise, and the Palestinians much worse.

*Just-Released Docs Show Monsanto ‘Executives Colluding With Corrupted EPA Officials to Manipulate Scientific Data’/ US Right to Know\ The damning documents were released by plaintiffs suing Monsanto in a claim that Roundup caused them to become ill with non-Hodgkin lymphoma More than 75 documents, including intriguing text messages and discussions about payments to scientists, were posted for public viewing early Tuesday morning by attorneys who are suing Monsanto on behalf of people alleging Roundup caused them or their family members to become ill with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. The attorneys posted the documents, which total more than 700 pages, on the website for the law firm Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman, one of many firms representing thousands of plaintiffs who are pursuing claims against Monsanto. More than 100 of those lawsuits have been consolidated in multidistrict litigation in federal court in San Francisco, while other similar lawsuits are pending in state courts in Missouri, Delaware, Arizona and elsewhere. The documents, which were obtained through court-ordered discovery in the litigation, are also available as part of a long list of Roundup court case documents compiled by the consumer group I work for, US Right to Know.

8 AUGUST 2017

*Federal Bank Regulator Drops a Bombshell as Corporate Media Snoozes/ Wall Street on Parade\ Last Monday, Thomas Hoenig, the Vice Chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), sent a stunning letter to the Chair and Ranking Member of the US Senate Banking Committee. The letter contained information that should have become front page news at every business wire service and the leading business newspapers. But with the exception of Reuters, major corporate media like the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News, the Business section of the New York Times and Washington Post ignored the bombshell story, according to our search at Google News. What the fearless Hoenig told the Senate Banking Committee was effectively this: the biggest Wall Street banks have been lying to the American people that overly stringent capital rules by their regulators are constraining their ability to lend to consumers and businesses. What’s really behind their inability to make more loans is the documented fact that the 10 largest banks in the country “will distribute, in aggregate, 99 percent of their net income on an annualized basis,” by paying out dividends to shareholders and buying back excessive amounts of their own stock. Hoenig writes that the banks are starving the US economy through these practices and if “the 10 largest US Bank Holding Companies were to retain a greater share of their earnings earmarked for dividends and share buybacks in 2017 they would be able to increase loans by more than $1 trillion, which is greater than 5 percent of annual US GDP.”

*New Files Confirm the JFK Investigation Was Controlled by the CIA – Not ‘Botched’ as Some Pretended [and Politico floats an old CIA-supported “false news”]/ AlterNet\ How Politico missed the story. In May 1964, top CIA officials stonewalled the official investigation of the murder of President John F. Kennedy by concealing or downplaying evidence about the Cuban contacts of the accused assassin, according to newly declassified documents. The documents, released online last month by the National Archives, show how two CIA spymasters concocted a series of false and misleading statements that served to steer the Warren Commission investigation away from evidence that might point to a conspiracy. The long-secret records, stamped with the words “Reproduction Prohibited,” shed new light on two key issues related to the death of JFK: 1) the agency’s plots to kill Cuban leader Fidel Castro at the time JFK was killed; and 2) the CIA’s pre-assassination knowledge of Lee Harvey Oswald, the 24-year-old ex-Marine, who was arrested for killing Kennedy. Politico claims the first batch of new files show “How the CIA Came to Doubt the Official Story of JFK’s Murder.” In the article, reporter Philip Shenon and professor Larry Sabato revive the theory that Fidel Castro might have been behind the crime. The “Castro done it” theory, it is worth noting, was first floated within hours of JFK’s murder—by CIA propaganda assets. The Cuban Student Directorate, a Miami-based organization funded by the agency, published a broadsheet less than 48 hours after JFK’s death, declaring that Oswald and Castro were the “presumed assassins.” The group was funded under a covert program with the code name AMSPELL. A declassified CIA memo shows the group was receiving $51,000 a month (the equivalent of $350,000 today) from the agency at the time of its conspiracy mongering.

As we have previously mentioned, with the increasingly obvious incapacity and incompetence of Trump, the topic of politics seemed to have become more important, and “US Politics” is again the leading topic in this issue, but it is followed in second place by “Trump”, due largely to continuing White House chaos, even without “The Russia Thing” topic which is comfortably in fifth place, just behind “Western Europe” and “US Cops”. These three latter topics form the second tier or midrange topics of this issue. Political activity in the UK (Brexit), Poland and France account for Western Europe being in third place. Trump’s “Russia Thing” just won’t go away and gets increasingly dangerous for him and his sidekicks who are continually being replaced, but that doesn’t make the scandal go away and it seems increasingly possible that Trump may not finish his term as president.

*How the New York Times Is Characterizing Disabled People as Burdens/ Rewire\ The fight for disabled lives is sometimes deeply existential. It is a fight for the right to exist in the first place, for the value of our lives to be weighted equally with nondisabled people’s. Last week, as disability rights activists from ADAPT occupied the national stage with civil disobedience at congressional offices, fighting policy that puts lives at risk, the New York Times quietly ran an opinion piece in “The Stone,” its philosophy series, that advocated for the murder of disabled children. These two things are connected because the uncritical presentation of support for what proponents of giving infants lethal doses of narcotics politely term “euthanasia” feeds social attitudes characterizing disabled people as burdens. Turning the lives of disabled people, especially children, into an intellectual debate isn’t new. In 2005, Dutch physicians unveiled the “Groningen protocol,” a guide to infanticide targeting “severely ill newborns.” In 2009, the Times ran an argument for “rationing” health care by Peter Singer, a noted proponent of dehumanizing and killing disabled people. The notion that killing disabled people should be not only acceptable, but perhaps even legislated, is alive and well in the West.

The bill that won’t die/ Progress Report\ After countless days of back and forth and mixed messages from both Trump and Senate Majority Leader McConnell, Trumpcare still isn’t dead. Last night, a group of Senate Republican holdouts met in yet another attempt to reach a compromise on their plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Here’s where the deal stands. The bottom line is they have yet to come up with a plan that doesn’t strip health care away from more than 20 million people. In fact, in all their negotiating, they’ve managed to take already cruel and immoral legislation and make it even worse. Yesterday, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released its analysis of the repeal and delay plan and the CBO confirmed that repealing the Affordable Care Act without a replacement plan would leave 32 million individuals without health care coverage and 75 percent of the country without a functioning individual insurance market. Now, Senate majority leaders are intent on bringing Trumpcare back from the dead. They are back to working on backroom deals to try to sell the same, damaging bill in a new package.

Is the CIA Reformable? Melvin A. Goodman, City Lights Books/ Truthout\ Not every agency or department of government can be reformed, and it is possible that the intricate web of habits, procedures and culture places the CIA in the non-reformable category. Once the political culture of an institution such as the CIA has been broken, it is extremely difficult — if not impossible — to rebuild or repair it.

“I did not collude” – That’s the main argument of the 11-page statement Jared Kushner sent to congressional committees this morning ahead of his closed-door testimony today about his contact with Russian officials/ Progress Report\ In his written statement, Kushner denies collusion, insists he had “no improper contacts,” and says he has not relied on Russian money to finance his business activities. The recently-discovered meeting with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya prompted the questioning of Kushner, Donald Trump Jr., and Paul Manafort. In his written statement, Kushner describes the meeting as inconsequential. But Kushner allegedly hid the meeting from the FBI at least twice—which appears to be a textbook case of obstruction of justice. Kushner is at the center of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump team’s ties to Russia, so what Kushner does, or doesn’t say today could change the direction of the entire investigation. – Sessions. Another character in the center of this Russia thing with Trump. Over the weekend, the Washington Post reported that Sessions had previously-undisclosed conversations with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the campaign about campaign-related matters. Sessions first failed to disclose the conversations in the first place, then he said they were not campaign-related.

The changing US role in the world – “US Role in the World: Background and Issues for Congress, July 12, 2017” (CRS)/ Secrecy News\ By its actions and its refusals to act, the Trump Administration is changing the profile of the United States in global affairs. Whether demonstrating disdain for longtime allies, disrupting diplomatic relationships and international agreements, or cultivating ties with authoritarian figures in Russia and elsewhere, President Trump seems to be radically altering the character and meaning of American foreign policy. But to what end? A new report from the Congressional Research Service tries to sort through the situation, and to advise Congress on its options under the circumstances. For the last 70 years, the US has sought “to promote and defend the open international order that the United States, with the support of its allies, created in the years after World War II,” according to CRS. That may no longer be the case. But exactly how the direction of US policy is changing, whether it should change, and what it should change to are all subject to dispute. The new CRS report, by specialists Ronald O’Rourke and Michael Moodie, presents the fundamental policy questions on a fairly abstract level, without mentioning Putin, Merkel, Duterte, or other leaders with whom the Trump Administration has acted to modify US relations.
