World Media – Synthesis Based on the Most Noteworthy Entries from 1 May 2017 to 15 May 2017

The major topics of the previous issue of “Intelligence, Secrecy & Power” (ISP, n. 692, 30 April 2017) were: US EXTREMISM (47X) “Trump’s Authority”, Ethics Waivers, Fox News, Confederate Monuments, 100 Days; US POLITICS (35X) Jon Ossoff & Georgia Election, Science Strikes Back, Trump-Russia Investigation, Sanctuary Cities; MIDDLE EAST (12X) Erdogan’s Turkey, 140 Afghan Soldiers Killed, Syria, Egypt; WESTERN EUROPE (10X) Paris Shootout, Brexit & Snap Elections; ASIA (10X) North Korea, THAAD Installed, Trump’s US Carrier Cheat; ISRAEL/PALESTINE (8X) Palestinian Hunger Strike, Israel Attacks Damascus Airport; ECONOMICS (7X) Trump’s Tax Cuts, Murdoch-Fox Business; US SPOOKS (6X) Trump-Russia, Russia-Taliban, NSA News; ENVIRONMENT (5X) Unhealthy US Air, Trump & Paris Agreement; LATIN AMERICA (5X) Venezuela Unrest, Brazil General Strike; US COPS (4X) Died of Thirst in Jail, Shot in the Back but No Trial; AFRICA (2X) Boko Haram, Kenya; EASTERN EUROPE (1X) Jehovah’s Witnesses Banned; and TECH (1X) Obesity Tops Life-years Lost.

This issue’s leading topics are: US POLITICS (57X) Trumpcare passes House & Trump Fires FBI Chief Comey, Trump “Idiot”; US EXTREMISM & TRUMP (43X) “Completely Inept”, No Use for the Constitution, Prison for Laughing, War on Sick People & the Poor; WESTERN EUROPE (14X) Brexit gets nasty, Macron President, Vatican sex abuse cases; US COPS (13X) Shootings of Unarmed Jordan Edwards, Walter Scott, Alton Sterling & Chicago “Gang Database”; US SPOOKS (9X) NSA Surveillance & Lost Digital Weapons; ASIA (6X) North Korea, South Korea; MIDDLE EAST (5X) Pakistan, China, Syria, Kurds & Turkey; ISRAEL/PALESTINE (4X) USA & Palestinian Hunger Strike; ENVIRONMENT (3X) Anti-Science Trump & Pro-Obama Senate; AFRICA (1X) Boko Haram, Nigeria; LATIN AMERICA (1X) Venezuela Clashes; EASTERN EUROPE (1X) Prison for “Pokémon Go” in Church; ECONOMICS (1X) Puerto Rico Bankruptcy; and ECO 04 *Puerto Rico Declares a Form of Bankruptcy.

For six successive issues of “ISP”, the two dominant media topics have been interchangeably “US Politics” and “US Extremism”, with other world topics coming far behind. But now with the increasingly obvious incapacity and incompetence of Trump politics seems to have become more important and Trump and US Extremism seem to be falling behind. However, Trump’s firing of FBI director Comey seems to have opened a new specific topic, “The Russia Thing”, which may well lead to the down fall of Trump and his closest allies, and a discrediting of the GOP that choose “to go along for the ride”. Both Western Europe and US Cops have moved up closer to the two dominant topics, while the remaining topics continue to be dispersed in the lower third groups of topics. In our forthcoming issues of “ISP”, we will probably be obliged to maintain a specific “The Russia Thing” topic and another US Extremism & Trump which may often not be an easy distinction.

Blasphemy and Terrorism: Catchall Phrases to Repress Dissent/ James M. Dorsey\ Blasphemy has joined terrorism as a catchall phrase to intimidate, incarcerate and kill critics and political opponents as well as stifle unfettered debate and settle scores. There is however one difference: terrorism is a justification for curbing freedom of expression often used by governments irrespective of how democratic or undemocratic they may be. Blasphemy serves not only as a tool for governments but has also empowered religious ultra-conservatives, frenzied mobs, and extremist groups and individuals. A four-decade long, massively funded Saudi public diplomacy campaign has created an enabling environment in Muslim majority countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh, where alleged blasphemers and atheists have been kidnapped, abused and sometimes killed in recent months and years. The Saudi campaign was designed to implant Sunni Muslim ultra-conservatism in Muslim communities across the globe as an anti-dote to the faded zeal of revolutionary Iran and position the kingdom rather than the Islamic republic as the dominant power in the Middle East and Muslim world beyond. It has fostered a world of ultra-conservatism that lives its own life often independent of the kingdom.

FRONT PAGE – TRUMP’S 100 DAYS, PARIS SHOOTOUT, NORTH KOREA, RUSSIA-TALIBAN

World Media – Synthesis Based on the Most Noteworthy Entries from 16 April 2017 to 30 April 2017

The major topics of the previous issue of “Intelligence, Secrecy & Power” (ISP, n. 691, 15 April 2017) were: US POLITICS (45X) Gorsuch Nuclear Option, Russia “Scheme”, Bannon Out, Government Shutdown, Clash with California; US EXTREMISM (37X) Trump Incited Violence, Climate Denial, Trump-Putin Back Channel, Fox-O’Reilly, Senate “Nuclear Option”, Holocaust Denial; MIDDLE EAST (22X) Syria Chemical Attacks, US Missile Attacks, Pakistan-India Extremists; WESTERN EUROPE (12X) French Elections, Brexit & EU “Red Lines”; US COPS (11X) No More Curbs on Police Abuses, Stomping on Handcuffed Black Man’s Face; ASIA (10X) North Korea Crisis, India vs. China; ECONOMICS (9X) Shrink Big Banks, Doctor Dragged Off a United Plane; US SPOOKS (8X) Russian Efforts, ATF Las Vegas Fling, CIA “Unholy Trinity”; ISRAEL/PALESTINE (6X) Colony Talks Suspended, Killings; EASTERN EUROPE (5X) Russia Subway Blast, No Chechnya Gays; LATIN AMERICA (5X) Paraguay, Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico; ENVIRONMENT (5X) Japan, Australia, Pennsylvania, the Rich Carbon Footprint; TECH (4X) Fake News App, Mexico Penis Seats; and AFRICA (2X) South Africa.

This issue’s leading topics are: US EXTREMISM (47X) “Trump’s Authority”, Ethics Waivers, Fox News, Confederate Monuments, 100 Days; US POLITICS (35X) Jon Ossoff & Georgia Election, Science Strikes Back, Trump-Russia Investigation, Sanctuary Cities; MIDDLE EAST (12X) Erdogan’s Turkey, 140 Afghan Soldiers Killed, Syria, Egypt; WESTERN EUROPE (10X) Paris Shootout, Brexit & Snap Elections; ASIA (10X) North Korea, THAAD Installed, Trump’s US Carrier Cheat; ISRAEL/PALESTINE (8X) Palestinian Hunger Strike, Israel Attacks Damascus Airport; ECONOMICS (7X) Trump’s Tax Cuts, Murdoch-Fox Business; US SPOOKS (6X) Trump-Russia, Russia-Taliban, NSA News; ENVIRONMENT (5X) Unhealthy US Air, Trump & Paris Agreement; LATIN AMERICA (5X) Venezuela Unrest, Brazil General Strike; US COPS (4X) Died of Thirst in Jail, Shot in the Back but No Trial; AFRICA (2X) Boko Haram, Kenya; EASTERN EUROPE (1X) Jehovah’s Witnesses Banned; and TECH (1X) Obesity Tops Life-years Lost.

This is now the sixth successive issue of “ISP” in which the two dominant media topics have been interchangeably “US Politics” and “US Extremism”, with other world topics coming far behind. In previous issue number 691, it was US Politics (45X) followed by US Extremism (37X), but this time it’s US Extremism (47X) and US Politics (35X). During the last fortnight of March, Trump and the GOP failed to impose a new Muslim travel ban and also failed to do away with Obamacare, two of their most important political objectives. During the first fortnight of April, Trump and the GOP failed to pass their next version of Trumpcare before the end of Trump’s first 100 days at the White House. Trump also got South Korea bad with him by claiming that a US Navy carrier task force was sailing to their aid when it wasn’t true. Indeed, foreign affairs seem to backfire with Trump and his vice president, Mike Pence, seems to have taken over in this area. Trump also seems to be incompetent concerning proposed legislation which GOP chiefs have taken back over. More and more, Trump’s role seems to be that of “paying to the Peanut Gallery” with his Tweets and vociferous public declarations. The Trump-GOP budget was only passed to avoid a government shut down and it was without a “wall” against immigration, without defunding Planned Parenthood and included several other compromises with Congressional Democrats. Elsewhere in the world, elections, wars and business all seem to continue on their way and not depend on Trump, with the exception of North Korea.
