FRONT PAGE – TRUMP NOMINEES, CORRUPTION OK, US COPS ABOVE THE LAW, “ERA OF BULLSHIT”, BREXIT

World Media – Synthesis Based on the Most Noteworthy Entries from 1 January 2017 to 15 January 2017

The major topics of the previous issue of “Intelligence, Secrecy & Power” (ISP, n. 684, 31 December 2016) were: TRUMP (26X) Auctions, Entitlements, Putin, Arms Race, Ivanka’s Boots, KKK, Climate Change Denial; ISRAEL/PALESTINE (20X) Mossad Killing, UN Resolution, Spat with Obama & Kerry, Almost Complete Isolation; US POLITICS (17X) Russian Election Hacking, Vote Recounts, Fake News, Muslim Registry Dumped; WESTERN EUROPE (15X) Berlin Jihad Attack, Everyone Wants Out of Brexit; AFRICA (10X) Presidents for Life in Trouble, Jihadist Suicide Bombers; US COPS & GUNS (10X) Lawless Cops, Fee for Arrest, Gun-lover Accidentally Shot & Killed; MIDDLE EAST (7X) Jihadists Attacks Everywhere as Aleppo Falls to Assad; US SPOOKS (7X) “Politicized” CIA, Sanctions against Russia; ENVIRONMENT (4X) Tillerson/Exxon’s “PR” on Climate Change; ECONOMICS (4X) CEO Wealth, Sugar Guidelines & Lead Poisoning; ASIA (3X) Japan & North Korea; EASTERN EUROPE (2X) Russia & Its Hackers; TECH (2X) Ebola Vaccine & Fake News; and LATIN AMERICA (1X) Colombian Peace Deal.

This issue’s leading topics are: US POLITICS (30X) Ethics Bye Bye, Russian Hacking, Fake News, Border Wall, Obama Care, Confirmations; TRUMP (19X) China Says “Shut Up”, Schwarz too, Son-in-Law, Fake News, Corruption OK; US COPS & GUNS (15X) Chicago, New York, Baltimore Cops above the Law; MIDDLE EAST (13X) Mosul Falling, Baghdad Bombs, Yemen, Cyprus Failure; US SPOOKS (13X) Russia’s Ops, False News, Hacking, Trump Nominees; ISRAEL/PALESTINE (11X) Embassy Move, Soldier Convicted, Truck Attack; WESTERN EUROPE (9X) “Brexit” in Hot Water, Poland’s Political Troubles; AFRICA (6X) “Presidents for Life” Just Don’t Want to Leave; ASIA (4X) India, South Korea, China; ENVIRONMENT (4X) Bad Water, Bad Pipelines, Monsanto; ECONOMICS (4X) Wealth in America, Trump & Wall Street; EASTERN EUROPE (3X) Russia, Trump & “Era of Bullshit”; TECH (3X) Ghostwriting for Sex; and LATIN AMERICA (2X) Brazil Prison Riots

As we get closer to the inauguration of Trump as US President, the difference between the topics “US Politics” and “Trump” is rapidly disappearing, although ISP may continue to differentiate between the two topics if needed in the future. Together, those two topics have thoroughly dominated the international media during the first half of January 2017. They are followed by the other major US topic, “Cops and Guns”, which has come up from the middle range topics. At the same time, Israel/Palestine, which was in second place because of the UN vote against Israeli colonization, has dropped back into the middle range topics, just ahead of Western Europe and its brewing Brexit troubles. With the coming inauguration of Trump, our next issue will surely be dominated by “US Politics” as the rest of the world will probably be playing “wait and see”, in Western Europe, in the Middle East and in Africa, unless of course Trump decides to suddenly confront some country such as North Korea, China, or Mexico; the list could be long.

*Glenn Greenwald: Mainstream US Media Is Culpable for Disseminating Deceitful News on Russia/ Democracy Now\ Glenn Greenwald: Right. So let me just give you two examples of just the corruption that’s at play here. So, when the Post unveiled their huge story about Russia fake news based on this McCarthyite list that has been proven to be a fraud, they had Marty Baron, the executive editor, the widely respected executive editor of the paper, go onto Twitter and announce this huge exposé. And predictably, it got tweeted and retweeted and shared thousands and thousands of times by all of the biggest journalists with the biggest social media followings. When the story collapsed over the next two weeks and they appended this huge editor’s note, The Washington Post did nothing to bring anyone’s attention to the fact that the key claims of the story have been gutted. Marty Baron refused to answer any questions over that two weeks about what the paper did, and he uttered not one syllable on Twitter or anywhere else to tell all the followers that he alerted to this story that the story had collapsed. With the story that I just talked about over the weekend of the — of how Putin had wanted to steal the heat from Vermonters to make them suffer in the winter, Brent Staples, who works for The New York Times editorial page, went on Twitter and said, “Our friend Putin has invaded the US electric grid.” And when that story collapsed and The Washington Post retracted it, he did something even worse: He just went and quietly deleted his tweet a day later, as though it never happened, and also failed to tell his 30,000 followers that what he had just told them the day before, that caused them to run around and share with all their friends on Facebook and Twitter that this has happened, was in fact a complete fiction.

*Don’t Be So sure About that ‘Connection’ You Felt on Tinder: People Are Hiring Ghostwriters to do their Online Flirting For Them/ AlterNet\ Ghostwriters chat with women online in order to tempt them into dates with their clients. Perusing Craigslist recently, I came across a hiring ad with the subject line “Ninja Writing Skills Needed,” and that’s how I discovered the creepier internet version of the 2005 movie Hitch (in which Will Smith plays a dating coach who uses earpiece microphones to put words into the mouths of men desperate to seem more interesting to their dates than they actually are). It was an ad for the company Virtual Dating Assistants (ViDA), which uses the wit and humor of ghostwriters to capture the hearts of potential dates for their high-paying clients. The company is marketed toward “men who are cash rich but time poor,” according to the ad, and unsuspecting women are the guaranteed product. In a way, this company is flipping the prostitution model on its back. Rather than paying women to date men they don’t know, people with some cash can pay the company to trick women into a false sense of security, so that they’ll date these men under false pretenses. ViDA ghostwriters pretend to be the men whose online profiles they manage. They send messages and engage in flirtations with women online, designed to emotionally ensnare them for ViDA’s clients.

*Trump Wants a Border Wall — and This Sheriff [Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson] Is Offering to Have His Prisoners Help Build It [and forced labor is not excluded]/ Boston Globe\ FALL RIVER — Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson has made a personal offer to President-elect Donald Trump: Bristol County inmates will be available to help build Trump’s border wall with Mexico. Yes, really. “I can think of no other project that would have such a positive impact on our inmates and our country than building this wall,” Hodgson, a Republican, said in remarks at his inaugural ceremony Wednesday night at Bristol Community College. “Aside from learning and perfecting construction skills, the symbolism of these inmates building a wall to prevent crime in communities around the country, and to preserve jobs and work opportunities for them and other Americans upon release, can be very powerful,” Hodgson said. Hodgson announced his offer to Trump moments after Governor Charlie Baker delivered the oath of office to him for his fourth six-year term as sheriff.

*San Escobar: How Poland’s foreign minister helped create a fake country/ WP\ This week, Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski was in New York to lobby for a seat on the UN Security Council from 2018 to 2019. His efforts were going well, Waszczykowski told reporters Tuesday. He had met with officials from nearly 20 countries, he said, including some Caribbean nations for the first time in Poland’s diplomatic history. “For example, with countries such as Belize or San Escobar,” Poland’s senior diplomat added. … Poland’s Foreign Ministry attempted to explain away the mistake, with spokeswoman Joanna Wajda saying that Waszczykowski had been thinking of the Caribbean islands known as St. Kitts and Nevis (or San Cristobal y Nieves in Spanish). However, the San Escobar Twitter account took this as an affront, tweeting that St. Kitts and Nevis was “interfering with our relations with Poland.” The imaginary country is also claiming to be in a dispute with Facebook over a page on the social network dedicated to El Frente Comunista de San Escobar, an alleged revolutionary force in the country.

*Mike Pompeo Confirmation Hearing for CIA Director: the Key Points/ Guardian\ Reprisals: Relatedly, legislators, former agency officials and intelligence experts are curious to see whether Pompeo will retaliate against CIA officials who contributed to the Russia assessment. Syria: Pompeo is said to oppose CIA sponsorship of Syrian rebel militias fighting dictator Bashar al-Assad, who has called Trump a “natural ally”. Torture: Pompeo has called the CIA’s defunct post-9/11 torture program “within the law” and said an architect of a landmark Senate report detailing its brutality, Dianne Feinstein of California, had “put American lives at risk”. Feinstein will question Pompeo at the hearing and is likely to ask about any intention he has of putting the CIA back in the torture business. Drones: Pompeo has indicated a comfort with expanding drone strikes, an Obama-era counter-terrorism tactic whose scope under Trump is undefined. “I believe the president needs a lot of space to maneuver. He should have a lot of authority to make decisions about when they’ve identified someone who is trying to kill Americans, to be able to go in and get them,” Pompeo told the Topeka Capitol-Journal in 2013.

15 JANUARY 2017

*Across the US, Police Contracts Shield Officers Fom Scrutiny and Discipline/ Reuters\ Reuters examined police union contracts across the country and found a pattern of protections afforded officers: Many contracts erase disciplinary records or allow police to forfeit sick leave for suspensions. Meantime, residents face hurdles in pursuing complaints. In late 2013, a San Antonio police officer stood accused of handcuffing a woman in the rear of his police car and then raping her. The same officer had remained on the force despite prior sexual misconduct complaints and other brushes with the law. So early in 2014, backed by the city council, City Manager Sheryl Sculley proposed reforms to the police union contract in the Texas city. She wanted to eliminate a clause that erased prior misconduct complaints from cops’ records, increase citizen participation in the complaint process, and end officers’ ability to forfeit vacation time rather than serve suspensions. The San Antonio Police Officers Association’s response: It targeted Sculley with a $1 million advertising campaign, according to estimates by the manager’s office. The union ran full-page newspaper ads and placed billboards downtown claiming crime rates rose because she refused to fill open police positions. Police backers broadcast ads highlighting Sculley’s six-figure salary and created a Facebook page, Remove City Manager Sheryl Sculley.

World Media – Synthesis Based on the Most Noteworthy Entries from 16 December 2016 to 31 December 2016

The major topics of the previous issue of “Intelligence, Secrecy & Power” (ISP, n. 683, 15 December 2016) were: TRUMP (39X) Recounts, China, Are Jews White, PizzaGate, RussiaGate, False News, Cabinet Nominees; WESTERN EUROPE (15X) Brexit Troubles, Government Changes & Elections in France, Austria & Italy; US POLITICS (14X) Standing Rock, Neo-McCarthyism, Washington Post, GOP Moves & Plans; MIDDLE EAST (8X) Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey; US COPS (7X) Some Trials but Never Guilty; ISRAEL/PALESTINE (5X) Demolishing Palestinian Homes & Making It All Legal; AFRICA (5X) Gambia’s “President for Life” Won’t Leave, Ghana, Nigeria; SYRIA (4X) Assad Wins in Aleppo; US SPOOKS (4X) FBI New Powers & CIA’s “Operation Condor”; ECONOMICS (4X) OPEC, Wells Fargo & Portland’s CEO Tax; EASTERN EUROPE (3X) Ukraine & Kaliningrad; LATIN AMERICA (3X) Colombia Peace Deal II; ASIA (3X) China & Philippines; TECH (3X) Wives’ Bruises, Facebook & Xmas Dildos; and ENVIRONMENT (2X) GMOs Are Failures, Monsanto’s PCBs.

This issue’s leading topics are: TRUMP (26X) Auctions, Entitlements, Putin, Arms Race, Ivanka’s Boots, KKK, Climate Change Denial; ISRAEL/PALESTINE (20X) Mossad Killing, UN Resolution, Spat with Obama & Kerry, Almost Complete Isolation; US POLITICS (17X) Russian Election Hacking, Vote Recounts, Fake News, Muslim Registry Dumped; WESTERN EUROPE (15X) Berlin Jihad Attack, Everyone Wants Out of Brexit; AFRICA (10X) Presidents for Life in Trouble, Jihadist Suicide Bombers; US COPS & GUNS (10X) Lawless Cops, Fee for Arrest, Gun-lover Accidentally Shot & Killed; MIDDLE EAST (7X) Jihadists Attacks Everywhere as Aleppo Falls to Assad; US SPOOKS (7X) “Politicized” CIA, Sanctions against Russia; ENVIRONMENT (4X) Tillerson/Exxon’s “PR” on Climate Change; ECONOMICS (4X) CEO Wealth, Sugar Guidelines & Lead Poisoning; ASIA (3X) Japan & North Korea; EASTERN EUROPE (2X) Russia & Its Hackers; TECH (2X) Ebola Vaccine & Fake News; and LATIN AMERICA (1X) Colombian Peace Deal.

The previous issue’s independent topic of “Syria” has once again been included in “Middle East”. However, as we have mentioned in previous issues, “now that Trump is ‘president-elect’, we have a separate topic for him and another for ‘US Politics’ that don’t directly involve him”. Trump still at the top of the list of topics, but followed this time by Israel/Palestine instead of Western Europe, despite the terrorist attack in Berlin. Indeed, Israel/Palestine has come up from below in the preceding issue of ISP, largely due to Obama’s decision to abstain during the UN vote against Israeli colonization of the Occupied Territories, the first such US abstention instead of a veto to protect Israel from the world and UN sanctions. Western Europe and US Politics stay near the top because of continuing Brexit troubles (Western Europe) and continuing scandal Russian hacking of the US presidential election vote. This scandal will probably to overshadowed soon by the Republican effort to impede the work of the independent ethic committee and force through confirmation of Trump buddies who are often incompetent, corrupt or even criminal. That will be January 2017’s major US conflict and probably Trump’s first major political confrontation with the American political establishment.

*By Attacking the Press, Donald Trump May Be Doing It a Favor – While biting tweets backfire and fake news abounds, subscriptions are on the rise in what could be journalism’s finest hour/ NYT\ The answer to all the troubling new questions about the future of the news business — how to make money, stop the spread of fake news and reassert a uniform view of reality — appeared last week in a plate of “flaccid, gray Szechuan dumplings.” That was how the Vanity Fair writer Tina Nguyen described her appetizer at the Trump Grill in a review that said the joint — the flagship eatery of White House North (Trump Tower) — could be “The Worst Restaurant in America.” Vanity Fair posted the piece late Wednesday. Early Thursday, Donald J. Trump did what he so often does when a news organization or private business makes him mad. He attacked its leadership and impugned its fiscal health, on Twitter. “Has anyone looked at the really poor numbers of @VanityFair Magazine,” the incoming president of the United States wrote. “Way down, big trouble, dead! Graydon Carter, no talent, will be out!” Actually, the magazine reports that its circulation, its revenue and its Web traffic are all up this year over last. And Mr. Carter, the editor of Vanity Fair and one of the best magazine editors in the country, is in no more danger of losing his job than he was a year ago, when Mr. Trump wondered aloud whether he was on his way out. But Mr. Carter seized the moment with a red home page banner calling Vanity Fair “The Magazine Donald Trump Doesn’t Want You to Read” and imploring visitors, “Subscribe Now!” Lo and behold, subscriptions spiked a hundredfold over their daily average, the magazine said, bringing Vanity Fair’s parent company, Conde Nast, the biggest number of new daily sign-ups in its 116-year history. (The tally had hit 42,000 by Sunday.) As Mr. Trump tries to burn the media village down, he may just be saving it.

*Corpus Christi’s Drinking Water Can Burn Human Skin – Trump’s new EPA chief will fix it, right/ Esquire, Charles P. Pierce\ In this story, however, we get another look into the “business-friendly” climate of which a succession of Texas governors are so very proud, and the one that incoming Secretary of Energy Rick Perry would like to bring to the nation at large. From the BBC: “The contaminant, they say, is Indulin AA-86, an asphalt emulsifier which can burn human skin in concentrated form. On Wednesday the city of 320,000 people announced that residents should not touch, drink or use the water. The ban has since been lifted for some city dwellers while officials investigate the origin of the spill. After a night-time meeting of the city council on Thursday, officials released a map of the city, showing that residents in the outlying regions could resume using city tap water. Angry residents had gathered outside city hall throughout the day to call for answers and to chant “What do we want? Clean water! When do we want it? Now!” As of Friday morning, about 15% of city residents were told they could use their water. «There’s just no pleasing some people, I tell you.

*Amazon Shoppers Are Zinging Ivanka Trump in the Best Possible Way – The reviews are in on her stretch-leather boots, and they are blistering/ The Frisky December 23\ When you give a human being a computer, they start to do things they normally wouldn’t do. Like buy things they can’t afford, talk to their relatives on Facebook, or sometimes, just troll other human beings. Sometimes trolling is scary, like the countless angry white men on Twitter. And sometimes it’s sort of amusing, like the people trolling Ivanka Trump boots on Amazon in the Q&A sections. One pair of Issa boots — a high heel boot with a zipper closure that retails anywhere from $65 to $100 — has attracted some people who need to let off of some steam about President-elect Trump. Is it immature and silly to rant about someone on the internet? Very much so. But the president-elect does it all the time, so why not? Democrats (and anyone whose soul isn’t completely black) have had no other outlet for their pain since the election. Not even the Electoral College will save us now, so America’s fate is pretty much sealed. Twitter isn’t really a safe space to hate on Trump, since any complaint about the incoming administration inevitably draws some racist or sexist comment from a Breitbart reader. Turning to Amazon to make fun of the Trump administration is the only true safe space left. Of course, as things are on the Internet, some of the “reviews” are pretty nasty, focusing on Ivanka’s appearance and implying that she sleeps with her father. But other comments seem to be from people who are just so fed up with the state of affairs in the country that they have no other way to complain other than leaving a stupid joke on an Amazon seller page. Which, of course, will probably become a useful skill if Trump’s presidency ends up being as close-minded and fascist as some of the people he’s nominated to cabinet positions. This is America, where it only makes sense to mock a failed hotelier-turned-politician on a sales page of a Website. Help us, please.

*Retired Army Colonel Says Her Social Security Checks Were Garnished to ‘Curtail Dissent’ – Ann Wright says she was hit with retaliation after protesting at a US drone base/ AlterNet December 23\ The prominent anti-war activist Ann Wright says that, after being arrested for protesting at a US drone base, she stopped receiving her monthly social security checks, in what she believes was a deliberate attempt “to curtail dissent of seniors.” According to an op-ed she wrote about the ordeal, Wright says she was arrested in March, along with members of Veterans for Peace and the Granny Peace Brigade, for participating in an annual protest against “assassin drones” at Creech drone base in Nevada. “We spent five hours in the Clark County Jail as our arrests were processed and then were released,” she wrote. “Our cases of being charged with ‘failure to disperse’ were eventually dropped by the Clark County court.” However, that would not be the end of Wright’s punishment. According to her account, “someone submitted my name and social security number to SSA as a person who has been confined in a jail since September 2016”—a claim she says amounts to falsification. It was not immediately clear who she suspects is behind the alleged maneuver.

28 DECEMBER 2016

*More People Die in Police Encounters Than We Thought – More People Die in Police Encounters Than We Thought/ Mother Jones\ The number of police-related fatalities in the United States appears to be far higher than the federal government has previously estimated. The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) has been tracking the data since 2000. But a new hybrid program that combines media reports and crowd sourcing techniques with reporting by police agencies has resulted in new estimates of civilian deaths that are closer to reality. The data, released last week, include deaths related to police interactions with subjects on the street as well as deaths that take place while a suspect is in police custody. The bureau’s researchers identified 1,348 arrest-related deaths from June 2015 through March 2016 using media reports and crowd sourced information—an average of about 135 deaths per month. For June through August 2015, they also surveyed police agencies and identified an additional 46 arrest-related deaths—or 12 percent more—than the number the bureau had tallied independently for that time period. Extrapolating the data, and correcting for the police-reporting disparity, the bureau estimated there were about 1,900 arrest-related deaths in the 12 months ending May 2016. The lack of reliable federal data on police-involved deaths received national attention in August 2014 after Michael Brown, an unarmed black teen, was killed in Ferguson, Missouri. In the absence of reliable numbers, the Washington Post and the Guardian US began tracking officer-involved killing in 2015 using media reports and crowd sourced information, a model the Department of Justice drew on for its new program. The Guardian US determined that police killed 1,146 people last year during interactions on the street. By contrast, police departments reported just 444 police shootings to the FBI in 2014.
