FRONT PAGE – TRUMP LOOSES MOST ALLIES, ISRAEL “OCCUPIER”, BREXITER INFIGHTING

World Media – Synthesis Based on the Most Noteworthy Entries from 1 October 2016 to 15 October 2016

The major topics of the previous issue of “Intelligence, Secrecy & Power” (ISP, n. 678, 30 September 2016) were US COPS (Killing of unarmed black men on videos, Columbus, Chicago, LA, Tulsa, Charlotte, Baltimore, El Cajon), US POLITICS (Mothers Die, Prison Strike, Sue Saudis & the White House), MIDDLE EAST (Bad US & Russian Air Strikes, Aleppo Attack), ISRAEL-PALESTINE (Knife Attacks & Increased Security, but No Changes), WESTERN EUROPE (Refugees, Migrants and Terrorism), TRUMP (GOP Support for Hillary, Donald’s Taxes and First Debate), ECONOMICS (Wells Fargo Scandal & Employee’s Class Action Case), INDIA-PAKISTAN (Indian Offensive against Jihadist Pakistan), followed by ASIA, US SPOOKS, AFRICA, TECH, LATIN AMERICA, ENVIRONMENT and EASTERN EUROPE. This issue’s leading topics are DONALD TRUMP (No Taxes, Lewd Talk & Rats Leaving Sinking Ship), US POLITICS (Voter Registration, Drone War, Anti-Abortion, Landowners), ISRAEL/PALESTINE (Israel “Occupier”, More Fake Passports, US Criticism), US COPS (How Not to Get Shot, Rapings on Video, Tracking Cop Use of Force), and BREXIT (Fallout Arrives & Serious Fighting among Themselves). These are followed by US SPOOKS, MIGRANTS, WESTERN EUROPE, ENVIRONMENT, MIDDLE EAST, PAKISTAN/AFGHANISTAN, LATIN AMERICA, ASIA, AFRICA, TECH and DIVERS.

The major change is TRUMP jumping for mid-range to the very top and it seems largely due to his lewd talk about women revealed in the press. Such talk has been deemed unacceptable by many Republican backers who have gone public and even called for backing Hillary Clinton. US POLITICS has maintained its second place position with news about restrictions on voter registration being judged illegal and the extension of voter registration deadlines. ISRAEL/PALESTINE has also maintained its position in the upper tier due to its UNESCO classification as an “occupying force”, its refusal to tell Ireland it’s won’t stop using falsified Irish passports and open US government criticism of new settlements in the Occupied Territories. BREXIT did not appear as a separate topic in our previous issue, but as fallout starts taking effect, the infighting has made the news and will probably continue to do so during the coming months.

FRONT PAGE – SEVERAL US KILLINGS BY COPS ON VIDEO, INCREASED MIDDLE EAST VIOLENCE & TRUMP TRAILS CLINTON

World Media – Synthesis Based on the Most Noteworthy Entries from 16 September 2016 to 30 September 2016

The major topics of the previous issue of “Intelligence, Secrecy & Power” (ISP, n. 677, 15 September 2016) were WESTERN EUROPE (Brexit Muddling, Far-Right Advances, EU Army, Kids & Women Jihadists), MIDDLE EAST (Turks Attack Syria, ISIS Burqa Ban, Saudi-Iranian Insults, More Refugees) and ISRAEL/PALESTINE (More Colonies, “Ethnic Cleansing”, US Criticizes but $38B in Arms), followed by US POLITICS, US SPOOKS, TRUMP, ASIA, US COPS, ENVIRONMENT, LATIN AMERICA, PAKISTAN/AFGHANISTAN, AFRICA, ECONOMICS and TECH. This issue’s leading topics are US COPS (Killing of Unarmed Black Men on video – Columbus, Chicago, LA, Tulsa, Charlotte, Baltimore, El Cajon), US POLITICS (Mothers Die, Prison Strike, Sue Saudis & the White House), and MIDDLE EAST (Bad US & Russian Air Strikes, Aleppo Attack). These are followed by ISRAEL-PALESTINE, WESTERN EUROPE, TRUMP, ECONOMICS, INDIA-PAKISTAN, ASIA, US SPOOKS, AFRICA, TECH, LATIN AMERICA, ENVIRONMENT and EASTERN EUROPE. Clearly, the sudden increase of incidents of US police killing of unarmed black men has caused this topic to jump from mid-range to the very top and far above Trump-Clinton campaign news, even though the candidates’ first debate has taken place. There is even one clear incident of a faked attack on a female police officer by a fictitious black man, which reveals the level of stress, violence and loss of control this wave of killings has engendered. Both Brexit Muddling and Israel-Palestine have fallen back, but Middle East violence and US Politics have maintained their positions near the top. It should be noted that India has finally “kicked out the stops” and started military action against Pakistan and its jihadists, a major change of policy that will probably be maintained and lead to a military confrontation if not stopped.

*CEOs Can Now Be Prosecuted like War Criminals at the Hague/ TeleSur\ The International Criminal Court announced Thursday it will now hold corporate executives and governments legally responsible for environmental crimes. The Hague court made explicit references to widening its approach to include land grabbing, which has allowed private corporations, with the help of governments, to take over large areas of foreign land to exploit natural resources. It will also prosecute for environmental destruction. “Chasing communities off their land and trashing the environment has become an accepted way of doing business in many resource-rich yet cash-poor countries,” said Gillian Caldwell, executive director at Global Witness. “Company bosses and politicians complicit in violently seizing land, razing tropical forests or poisoning water sources could soon find themselves standing trial in the Hague alongside war criminals and dictators. The ICC’s interest could help improve the lives of millions of people and protect critical ecosystems.”

*Tulsa police release footage of officer killing unarmed black man with car trouble – The videos seem to contradict the department’s initial explanation/ Think Progress\ Dash cam videos released Monday show Tulsa Police Department officers killing an unarmed 40-year-old black man who had his hands raised. Terence Crutcher was shot and killed by police shortly before 8:00 pm on Friday night. He was unarmed and apparently seeking police assistance because his car had broken down. Tulsa Police Chief Chuck Jordan confirmed Monday afternoon at a press conference that Crutcher had no weapon, and hinted that his department is treating his death like a crime. The videos, including three from police cars and a fourth from a helicopter, are disturbing. None captures the entirety of the interaction between Crutcher and Officer Betty Shelby, who shot and killed him. But all of them show him with his hands raised, walking back to the side of his car, while Shelby follows with her gun raised. Another officer arrives, and fires his Taser at roughly the same moment that Shelby shoots Crutcher.

*Struggling for Women’s Rights: International Sports Associations Duck the Gun [Saudi Arabia and Iran]/ By James M. Dorsey\ This is an expanded version of remarks made at Interdisciplinary Net’s Politics, Money and Sport Places, and Mega Events workshop in Oxford, 13-15 October 2016. … The issue in Saudi Arabia and Iran is women’s sporting rights. In Iran, it really is about only one right; the right to attend male sporting tournaments. Iranian women sports are otherwise by and large well developed. In Saudi Arabia, it’s about stadium attendance too, but it’s about much more, it’s about the right to physical exercise and the right to compete in any sporting discipline. Attitudes of international sports association towards upholding women’s sporting rights in Saudi Arabia and Iran constitutes a mixed bag. In fact, until 2012 both countries got away with restricting women’s rights with no risk to their ability to host or compete in international tournaments and no risk of being barred or their reputations being tarnished. “It’s humiliating. First you belong to your father and brother, then to your husband son who can do with you what they want. It is humiliating. How can you say that women’s rights go against culture? The problem is: who cares about women’s rights?” says Darya Safai, a 41-year old Iranian student activist-turned dentist and women’s sports campaigner who was jailed in Iran before fleeing via Turkey to Belgium.

*Charlotte erupts after police kill black man [Keith Lamont Scott] who was waiting for his kid to get home [and reportedly reading a book]/ Think Progress\ One year after Jonathan Ferrell’s killer got off, the same police department killed another black man. Protesters clashed with riot police and shut down a major highway overnight in Charlotte, North Carolina, after city police shot and killed 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott on Tuesday afternoon. Scott was reportedly sitting in his truck waiting for one of his children to get home from school when plainclothes officers began to serve a warrant on a different man in a nearby apartment complex. Police and Scott’s family offer very different accounts of what happened next. Charlotte-Mecklenberg Police Department Chief Kerr Putney says that Scott got out of his truck holding a handgun, prompting officer Brentley Vinson to shoot and kill him. But neighbors and family members say Scott was unarmed and reading a book when the non-uniformed officers came upon him and Vinson, who is reportedly black, fired.

*Fighting for the Soul of Islam: A Battle of the Paymasters/ By James M. Dorsey\ A gathering of prominent Sunni Muslim leaders in the Chechen capital of Grozny that appeared to have effectively excommunicated Saudi-backed ultra-conservatism potentially opens not only a theological but also a geopolitical rift in the Muslim world. The conference, sponsored and attended by some of Saudi Arabia’s closest allies, suggests that Saudi funding of ultra-conservative worldviews may be meeting its match in more liberal interpretations of Islam backed by the United Arab Emirates and Russia. Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov, an Islamist with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, recently convened some of Islam’s most prominent leaders to determine the theologically and politically explosive question of who is a Sunni Muslim. Professing to be a Sufi, a more mystical interpretation of Islam, Kadyrov lacks the religious credentials beyond his native Chechnya where he was recently re-elected with 98 percent of the vote. Kadyrov’s ability to bring together an illustrious group of Muslim scholars highlights successful behind-the-scenes manoeuvring by the United Arab Emirates to counter Salafism despite the UAE’s close collaboration with Saudi Arabia as a member of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and in the war in Yemen. It also shines a light on Russian efforts to cultivate Muslim religious leaders.
