SPECIAL REPORTS – WIKIPEDIA-CIA, SYRIA, STEALTH & FRENCH SPY CHIEF

There has been a recent series of interesting reports worth mentioning specifically. They concern, respectively, more doubtful treatment in Wikipedia of delicate CIA questions, the historical background of the civil war in Syria, US and Russian technology in aviation (both making stealth aircraft and detecting them), and a detailed presentation of the new French foreign intelligence chief.

The ADI has previously noted “Wikipedia” problems with subjects that are sensitive for Washington such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and most things dealing with the CIA and the NSA. The case of former CIA agent Philip Agee was no different. We noted with several witnesses (“Intelligence”, N. 511, 21 January 2008, “FRONT PAGE – USA – PHILIP AGEE “GETS THE CIA” ONE LAST TIME”, p.1) that on Agee’s death on 7 January 2008 that “Wikipedia” had no entry on Agee, although his name was mentioned in several “Wikipedia” entries of persons who had worked with or known Agee. His widow, Giselle Roberge-Agee, an American citizen (not a German citizen as “Wikipedia” claims) tried several times to have corrections made to the current “Wikipedia” entry, but to no avail. For Agee, “Wikipedia” has an incorrect date of birth (it’s 19 January and not 19 July) and an incorrect place of birth (Tacoma Park, Maryland, and not Tacoma, Florida), but in this it is only quoting journalists who simply have not “done their homework” and did not contact Agee before his death or his widow after his death. The general “Wikipedia” treatment of Agee as something close to a “traitor” is belied by the wide respect he was given by intelligence professionals who weren’t doing the CIA’s biding, including John Stockwell and many others (see the “Intelligence” article mentioned above). Agee’s passport was not “revoked”; it was seized by the State Department. Agee, like his wife, was never a German citizen but did have German travel documents. But perhaps the most serious “Wikipedia” mistake is simply stating that Agee took Barbara Bush (the mother of the Bush Obama replaced) to trial for claiming he was responsible for the 1977 death of CIA chief of station in Athens, Richard Welch, when not only Agee took Barbara Bush to trial and asked for damages, but he won the trial and Barbara had to take out her false accusation that apparently “everybody in the White House” was saying, including her husband who was a former CIA director before becoming president. The sloppy journalists who never contacted Agee also avoided reading articles in the British “Guardian” where this information is in clear English or the detailed article in French published by the daily “Liberation” where the people who killed Welch, the “17 November” movement, clearly described how they found Welch and killed him. These sloppy journalists and “Wikipedia” also didn’t look into the declassified State Department telegrams that Agee released and are now in the New York University Tamiment Library where Henry Kissinger reportedly had Welch warned that he should not move into the Athens house of the former CIA chief of station since local radicals knew about it. But one can easily imagine with the current Snowden-NSA and the Assange-WikiLeaks-Manning cases, “Wikipedia” doesn’t have the time and resources to correct all mistakes in published US “national security” information.

The major association of former French intelligence specialists — the “Amicale des Anciens des Services Speciaux de la Defence Nationale” (AASSDN) — in its most recent “Bulletin”, n. 229, April 2013, published a detailed historical background article on Syria (“Le Printemps Arabe”, pp. 6-12) by Alain Chouet, former head of security intelligence at the French DGSE foreign intelligence service and a specialist on the Middle East. Chouet describes in detail the various and changing alliances between different communities in Syria and, in particular, the fact the Assad Alawite regime defends not only the Alawites, but also the Christians, the Druze and other minorities from the Sunnite majority which in the past has massacred them and held them in a situation close to slavery. According to Chouet, the ongoing civil war in Syria is not new and actually started in 1980 when jihadists of the Muslim Brotherhood attacked and took over the Syrian army officer academy in Alep and systematically executed all 80 Alawite military cadets. In retaliation in 1982, then President Hafez el-Assad razed the jihadist stronghold of Hama, killing between 10 and 20,000 people.

On 16 September 2013, “Aviation Week” published an article, “Counter-Stealth – Russian Radars Shrink the US Lead” (p. 16), by Bill Sweetman, describing in detail the performance of the older very high frequency (VHF, 1-2 meter wavelengths) Russian radars and now the new 55Zh6ME radar complex which includes a VHF module, but also a L-band (decametric) module and a S-band (centimetric) module, which means that radar cross-sections (RCS) down to square centimeters can be detected, but only at certain shorter distances and in narrower windows. Supposedly this large Russian system can be transported by tuck and set up or taken down in 15 minutes, which certain specialists doubt, thus making it a target for high-speed anti-radar missiles. However, its S-band capacities would mean it could detect missiles, even stealthy cruise missiles.

In the current n. 362, September 2013, issue of “Faits & Documents” (the confidential newsletter of Emmanuel Ratier), the front page (and the second page) article is a detailed biographical description of Bernard Bajolet, appointed on 10 April 2013, the new head of French DGSE foreign intelligence. Under the preceding president, Nicolas Sarkozy, he had been appointed to the newly created function of National Coordinator of Intelligence on 23 July 2008. Bajolet is no outsider to intelligence and has previously served in Algiers and Kabul.

4-10 NOVEMBER 2013 – THIS WEEK’S NOTEWORTHY “ISP” ENTRIES

4 November 2013

Tor* 1104 Buzz Flash/ Post 9/11, CIA and Pentagon Forced Doctors to Become Torturers, Study Charges: What do Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and Dr. Mengele all have in common?  They believe physicians are well-suited to perform torture. § The Guardian UK headline on November 4 reconfirms the outlaw depravity of the US after 9/11 in terms of torture, “CIA made doctors torture suspected terrorists after 9/11, taskforce finds: Doctors were asked to torture detainees for intelligence gathering, and unethical practices continue, review concludes.” § The report of the Taskforce on Preserving Medical Professionalism in National Security Detention Centres concludes that after 9/11, health professionals working with the military and intelligence services “designed and participated in cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment and torture of detainees”.

Spy* 1104 CNN/ NSA, British Intelligence Monitoring Branch among Worst Surveillance Offenders, Snowden Says [actually, the British GCHQ is “tasked” and “paid” by the NSA]

5 November 2013

Tor* 1105 NYT/ Medical Ethics Have Been Violated at Detention Sites, a New Report Says: A group of experts in medicine, law and ethics accused the United States government of directing doctors and others to ignore their professional codes of ethics by abusing detainees. § A group of experts in medicine, law and ethics has issued a blistering report that accuses the United States government of directing doctors, nurses and psychologists, among others, to ignore their professional codes of ethics and participate in the abuse of detainees in Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. § The report was published Monday by the Institute on Medicine as a Profession, an ethics group based at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the Open Society Foundations, a pro-democracy network founded by the billionaire George Soros. § The authors were part of a 19-member task force that based its findings on a two-year review of public information. The sources included documents released by the government, news reports, and books and articles from professional journals.

Spy* 1105 BBC/ Germany calls in British ambassador over spy claims [since British GCHQ does NAS’ biding in Western Europe]: The British ambassador in Berlin has been called in to Germany’s foreign ministry to respond to spying allegations. The UK’s Independent newspaper says the British embassy in Berlin may house a “top-secret listening post”.

Eco* 1105 Real News Network/ First Wall Street Criminal Confession in a Generation … Still No One in Jail: Hedge fund SAC advisers have admitted to insider trading. This is the first criminal confession from a Wall Street firm in a generation.

Pol* 1105 Talking Points Memo: Former US House Speaker Jim Wright Denied Voter ID Card in Texas

6 November 2013

Pol* 1106 NYT/ De Blasio Is Elected New York City Mayor [by 73% which is a crushing GOP defeat]: His landslide victory, stretching from the working-class precincts of central Brooklyn to the suburban streets of southeast Queens, amounted to a forceful rejection of the hard-nosed, business-minded style of governance that reigned at City Hall for the past two decades and a sharp leftward turn for the nation’s largest metropolis.

Isr* 1106 BBC/ Israel ex-FM Avigdor Lieberman cleared of corruption [and Israel’s cabinet will now shift further to the right]: Israel’s former Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has been cleared of corruption charges by a court in Jerusalem. Mr Lieberman will now return to the cabinet, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced.

7 November 2013

Spy* 1107 Reu/ UK spy chiefs emerge from shadows to blast Edward Snowden [UK spies doing Washington’s bidding, just like for Bush and Iraqi WMD]/ Britain’s intelligence chiefs used their first ever joint public appearance to complain that documents by former U.S. intelligence operative Edward Snowden had put secret operations at risk and were being “lapped up” by al Qaeda. § In an unprecedented evidence session before parliament that local media likened to a scene from a James Bond film, the heads of Britain’s three main intelligence agencies said Snowden’s disclosures about the mass surveillance they undertake had prompted them to consider being more open about what they do. § But they said parts of their work had to remain secret for national security reasons and that the data leaks, which detailed Britain’s close cooperation with the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA), had caused huge damage.

Env* 1107 Truthout/ Monsanto Wins Again: Voters Reject Washington GMO Labeling Initiative [incredible how money and buying votes can still wins out over public health and public choice]: Voters rejected GMO food labeling in Washington on Tuesday after months in which labeling was leading in the polls and before Monsanto and processed food companies and markets inserted unprecedented millions of dollars into the campaign to defeat the measure.

8 November 2013

Iran* 1108 NYT/ West and Iran Seen as Nearing a Nuclear Deal [except for opposition from Israel and its backers]: Even as the two sides tried to finalize the agreement on Thursday, fissures have widened between the United States and some of its principal allies over the potential pact. … Critics, however, are not waiting for an agreement to be announced before denouncing it as a failure of will. On Thursday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel warned of a “grievous historic error” that he said would enable Iran to keep enriching uranium and preserve the option of developing nuclear arms while undermining support in the international community for economic sanctions. … Robert Einhorn, a former State Department official who supports the administration’s negotiating strategy, dismissed as “not achievable” the maximalist approach advocated by Mr. Netanyahu.

Pol* 1108 NYT/ Hollywood’s Ready to Cast Clinton in Top Role [so goes the entertainment industry, so goes US politics]: Many powerful donors in the entertainment industry chose Barack Obama over Hillary Rodham Clinton in 2008, but their calculations are different this time.

FBI* 1108 NYT/ Accounts Differ to FBI and CBS on Benghazi [and for some reason, the NYT hide this information in the “Business” section]: Conflicting statements given by a security officer to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and to CBS call into question a “60 Minutes” report.

Isr* 1108 Reu/ US, Israel lose voting rights at UNESCO over Palestine row: UNESCO has suspended the voting rights of the United States and Israel, two years after both countries stopped paying dues to the UN’s cultural arm in protest over its granting full membership to the Palestinians. § The U.S. decision to cancel its funding in October 2011 was blamed on U.S. laws that prohibit funding to any UN agency that implies recognition of the Palestinians’ demands for their own state.

Eco* 1108 Truthout/  SAC Billionaire Steven Cohen Can’t Make His Mommy’s Monkey Jump: This week, Cohen’s hedge fund, SAC Capital Advisors, will plead guilty to criminal charges of insider trading and pay $1.2 billion in fines and forfeitures. And it’s all Steven’s mommy’s fault. And her monkey’s… … “Yea, but he really loved his mother. Steven couldn’t take a poopie without calling Mommy. Every week we’d go have dinner with her, and she would say to him, ‘All I know is, money makes the monkey jump! Money makes the monkey jump!’ § “And we’d leave, and half the time in the car he’d be in tears about his mommy humiliating him.” No matter how many millions and billions he piled up, he couldn’t make his mommy’s monkey jump.

9 November 2013

Pol* 1109 TPM/ Former ’60 Minutes’ Producer – Discredited Benghazi Story Was Done to Appeal to Conservatives [so the major media caters to the right-wingers, thus showing that the supposed “liberal bias” never existed]

10 November 2013

Pak* 1110 Daily Mail/ Pakistan BANS memoir by Malala, the girl shot by the Taliban for going to school [so the government is closer to the Taliban than to Malala]: Education officials in Pakistan have banned the memoir of Malala Yousafzai, the teenager shot by the Taliban, from 40,000 schools as she ‘represents the West’.
