The full statistics for media reports in this issue of ISP are, respectively, by volume: Africa (12K kilobytes, 41X reports and 1* noteworthy reports); Iraq (8K 21X 4*); Pakistan (8K 20X 1*); Syria (8K 27X 0*); Asia (7K 27X 0*); FBI (7K 16X 1*); CIA (7K 16X 1*); Guns USA (7K 18X 1*); Israel (7K 25X 0*); Politics USA (6K 20X 2*); Western Europe (6K 20X 0*); Economics (6K 20X 2*); Egypt (5K 12X 0*); Latin America (4K 11X 2*); Environment (4K 10X 2*); Iran (3K 8X 1*); Afghanistan (3K 11X 1*); Tech (2K 2X 0*); DOD (2K 7X 0*); Gitmo (2K 4X 0*); Middle East (2K 4X 0*); Eastern Europe (1K 2X 0*).

In the last issue of ISP, the leading topics were FBI, US Politics, Asia and Israel, none of which are leading topics this time, but in that issue there were separate sections for Mali, Nigeria and the report on Algerian anti-terrorist services which together could have been included in the Africa section, thus implying that Africa is a continuing major topic. CHAVEZ, STATE & CIA ENEMY, DIES

CHAVEZ, STATE & CIA ENEMY, DIES

With this entry “0306 NYT/ Chavez Dies, Leaving a Bitterly Divided Venezuela, William Neuman”, we added the comment:  [“bitterly divided” sounds like a State Dept. or CIA psychological operation since Chavez was massively re-elected by Venezuelans and was still very popular].

Indeed, this is neither the “New York Times”, nor the State Department, nor the CIA’s first try at this game against Chavez. ISP archives include the following information.

29 February 2012, in “Informed Comment”, “Top 5 Stratfor Revelations”, Juan Cole stated that “Wikileaks is publishing internal memos of the Stratfor security analysis firm. … 3. Stratfor Vice President Fred Burton, a former State Department official involved in counter-terrorism, lamented that in the old days the US would simply have assassinated Venezuelan leftist leader Hugo Chavez and Bolivian leftist leader Evo Morales.”

The UN’s “Smartbrief” on 4 October 2012, citing “The Guardian” (London) (10/2), “Los Angeles Times”/World Now blog (tiered subscription model) (10/3) [“As ‘Chavismo’ sputters, a charismatic challenger woos Venezuelans”, by Carol J. Williams); , “The Miami Herald” (free registration) (10/3) [“Chavez’s defeat could have major impact in Cuba”, by Juan Tamayo], BBC (10/2)” to claim that “Henrique Capriles [Chavez’s US-backed opponent], who is shown in some polls to have a slim lead.”

On 10 October 2012, NACLA, in “A Hall of Shame for Venezuelan Elections Coverage” made things much more clear: Analysis of media coverage following Hugo Chavez’s presidential win in Venezuela proves that the country’s transparent elections were not as newsworthy as the inane question of whether Venezuela is a dictatorship. Hugo Chavez, as a number of us expected, won the Venezuelan presidential election in yet another landslide: 55.1% to his opponent Henrique Capriles’s 44.2%. To understand why Chavez’s electoral victory would be apparent beforehand, consider that from 1980 to 1998, Venezuela’s per capita GDP declined by 14%, whereas since 2004, after the Chavez administration gained control over the nation’s oil revenues, the country’s GDP growth per person has averaged 2.5% each year. At the same time, income inequality was reduced to the lowest in Latin America, and a combination of widely shared growth and government programs cut poverty in half and reduced absolute poverty by 70% — and that’s before accounting for vastly expanded access to health, education, and housing. However, the establishment media broadly anticipated that yesterday’s election would be a repudiation of the Chavez administration’s policies [misleading or erroneous reports in the “New Yorker” (erroneously declared that “Venezuela leads Latin America in homicides”), the “Guardian” (“Hugo Chavez: A Strongman’s Last Stand” [by Rory Carroll, “Some polls give the president a wide lead, others show him trailing”, but no references given]), the “Washington Post” (compares Chavez to Putin and Ahmadinejad and incorrectly claims that Chavez controls “most television channels”), the “New York Times” (“How Hugo Chavez Became Irrelevant [a favorite neocon term]”), “US News & World Report” (“President Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan dictator”)]

GLOBAL TOPICS, TECHNOLOGY & TECHNIQUES

Intelligence, Secrecy & Power, N. 612, 4 March 2013

TECH – ASTEROIDS, SOFTWARE, MEDIA, QAIDA BOOK, TORTURE & ASSANGE

0218 UN/ UN considers asteroid early-warning network: The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs is expected to propose a global asteroid-warning network that observers say could be expanded to issue alerts about smaller objects like the meteor that exploded Friday above the Russian city of Chelyabinsk.

0219 UN/ Online tool projects future of conflict in Africa: An online tool from the Strauss Center’s program on Climate Change and African Political Stability synthesizes mapping, analysis and raw data from conflict in Africa from 1990 through 2011 to show how climate change could influence security across the region. The Conflict Dashboard “puts volumes of historical and real-time data in the hands of the people who need it,” said program manager Ashley Moran.

0224 FAIR/ Journalism by “and for” the Sponsors: Sponsored stories like Salon’s Scientology article are becoming ever more common, and will soon be the usual in the corporate media world. These kinds of arrangements happen all the time.

0224 Renseignor-Radio Iran (0223)/ In Mali, discovery of a manual explaining how Al-Qaida fights against drones: To protect against drones, you must be covered with rugs made with desert grasses. This was written in a manual left by Islamic fighters in Timbuktu when the French and Malian troops arrived. This document in Arabic was found by journalists from the Associated Press agency. The document lists 22 tips to protect against drone attacks. It is advisable to place reflective objects on vehicles or on the roofs of buildings to escape the eye of the unmanned aircraft. The guide recommends not using permanent headquarters and create false rallies with dolls or statues to deceive monitoring. Electronic silence is also recommended by stopping all communications, and jamming the airwaves with a Russian device called Racal. According to Malian authorities, these tips were put into practice by the Islamists. This manual shows that they had anticipated the arrival of drones in the region.*

0225 Tom Dispatch/ “I Begged for Them to Stop” – Waterboarding Americans and the Redefinition of Torture: A look at the history of waterboarding in the American military and its impact on how we view torture today.

0301 Truthout/ Resistance From a Cage – Julian Assange Speaks to Norwegian Journalist Eirik Vold: “It’s shameful,” Assange says, “that a handful of activists in WikiLeaks have published more secret documents than the entire establishment press, with all its billion-dollar budgets, technical competence and human resources, altogether.”
