2012 Intelligence, Secrecy & Power Strategic Diagram now available

Since we haven’t been able to upload it here, now available by email request is the 2012 Intelligence, Secrecy & Power Strategic Diagram with centrality (number of ties outside a cluster/topic) as the horizontal axis and density (number of internal ties in a cluster/topic) as the vertical axis. The “mainstream” topics are central and dense (upper right-hand quadrant) and are “kill”, “Israel”, “Syria”, “Egypt”, “Republican” and “Scandal”. Further development and analysis will be published in Intelligence, Secrecy & Power (ISP).

THE 2012 “INTELLIGENCE, SECRECY & POWER” SYRIA SPECIAL REPORT

This 48-page report is based on the 631 media articles on the Syrian conflict that figured in “Intelligence, Secrecy & Power” during 2012. The report is entirely in ASCI text format, even the rather basic mathematical calculations and graphics. There has been little effort to entirely eliminate media articles which are similar or almost copies of each other, but which arrived in our data collection process at different times or from different sources.

The 631 media articles published during the 366 days of 2012 make an average of 1.724 articles per day, which is then compared to the number of articles in each of the 20 issues of IPS in 2012 (third column below). The fourth column is the number of days covered by each issue of ISP. The fifth column mean expected number of articles that should have appeared in each issue. The sixth column is the difference between the actual number of articles and the expected mean number of articles for each issue. This column shows (see the graphic) that there were three chronological periods of particular activity recorded during the following ISP issues: 04-06 (27 Feb.-2 Apr. or N. 592-N. 594; 11-12 (18 Jun.-2 Jul.) or N. 599-N. 600; and 17-20 (29 Oct.-31 Dec.) or N. 605-N. 608. Below, these three periods are characterized by selected phrases taken from each issue for each period.
