Rather clearly, the major topics of conflict in the world press for the second fortnight of July 2020 are “Trump”, “Covid USA”, “Portland & Trump’s Paramilitaries”, “‘Black Lives Matter’ (BLM) & Police”, and at much less important level “Masks”, “Social Networks” and “Islam”.

FRONT PAGE – USA COVID CRISIS & COP VIOLENCE, ISRAEL/PALESTINE, TRUMP & FACEBOOK, CHESAPEAKE ENERGY

World Media – Synthesis Based on the Analysis of All 16 June 2020 to 30 June 2020 Entries

There’s international opposition to Israel’s threat to occupying the West Bank (“Rights experts call for global opposition to Israel’s annexation plans”, UN, 17 June), but the most effective opposition seems to be Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s proposal to tie US billions of dollars for the Israel military to the respect of Palestine sovereignty in the West Bank: “Ocasio-Cortez raises AIPAC ire over effort to tie Israel aid to annexation” (Politico, 30 June).

The worldwide shale gas and fracking giant, Chesapeake Energy “files for bankruptcy protection” (CNBC, 29 June), victim of the COVID-related fall of fossil fuel consumption and public opposition to having its underground destroyed by fracking.

In terms of legal rights in the US, the “Trump” Supreme Court has shown some independence: “Supreme Court Expansion of Transgender Rights Undercuts Trump Restrictions” (NYT, 16 June); and “Justice Roberts Joins Liberal Wing to Block Louisiana’s Restrictive Abortion Law” (Truthout, 19 June). Even conservative Mississippi is showing some change: “SEC to Mississippi: Change Confederate-themed flag or risk losing college sports events” (NBC, 19 June), followed by “Mississippi legislators vote to remove Confederate battle emblem from state flag” (CNBC, 29 June).

And there has even been “forced” changes at very pro-Trump Facebook: “Facebook Removes Trump Ads Displaying Symbol Used by Nazis” (NYT, 19 June); “Facebook advertisers hit pause [North Face & Patagonia already]” (Popular Information, 23 June); “Facebook creates fact-checking exemption for climate deniers [CO2 Coalition]” (Popular Information, 25 June); “Then [after Unilever] Coca-Cola and Hershey’s announced they would not advertise on Facebook in July” (Popular Information, 27 June); “Hemorrhaging advertisers, Facebook launches PR blitz” (Popular Information, 30 June).

But these international developments are dwarfed by this fortnight’s two major topics: the COVID pandemic, particularly in the US, and the American police killings of Black Americans. On an international level, the COVID news is already bad: “WHO Reports Largest Single-Day Increase in Confirmed Coronavirus Cases” (TruthOut, 22 June); “The Pandemic Is Still Raging – The President Pretends Otherwise – NYT Editorial Board” (NYT, 24 June); “US coronavirus cases hit highest single-day total with over 36,000 new cases” (Business Insider, 25 June); “EU Plans to Bar Most US Travelers When Bloc Reopens” (NYT, 27 June); “Actual Coronavirus Infections Vastly Undercounted, CDC Data Shows [10 times higher]” (NYT, 28 June); “COVID-19 pandemic ‘not even close to being over’, WHO chief warns” (UN, 30 June). On the level of the States, the situation has particularly degenerated in GOP-dominant States such as Texas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia and Alabama: “Texas Governor Greg Abbott is refusing to allow city or local governments to implement mask wearing requirements” (Progress Report, 18 June); “The Montgomery, Alabama City Council voted down a proposal to require mask-wearing in public spaces last night” (Progress Report, 18 June); “COVID-19 Surge in Florida, Texas & Georgia – Fading only in New York, New Jersey & Michigan” (Progress Report, 18 June); “Coronavirus US: Arizona casinos shut down again as cases surge” (Daily Mail, 20 June); “Texas Pauses Reopening as Virus Cases Soar Across the South and West” (NYT, 26 June); “Florida Reports 9,000 New Coronavirus Cases In Biggest Daily Surge” (TruthOut, 26 June): “Surge in US Covid-19 cases as Arizona joins Texas in halting reopening” (Guardian, 26 June); “Alabama sets record high for coronavirus cases in a single day, tops 1,000 for second time” (AL.com, 27 June); “Florida’s runaway Covid spike hits record high – Governor refuses to mandate masks” (Miami Herald, 27 June). The GOP COVID Learning Curve seems to be rather flat. But there’s been COVID trouble in non-GOP territories too: “Gov. Gavin Newsom said requiring masks is a necessary step as Californians continue to ignore recommended face-covering guidelines” (NPR, 19 June) and “New York imposes quarantine on eight US states [New Jersey & Connecticut may follow]” (BBC, 25 June).

Police violence, and in particular the killing of black Americans by often white Police officers, has continued: “The [white] Atlanta Officer was fired after shooting [black] Rayshard Brooks in the back and the city’s police chief submitted her resignation” (Fox, 16 June); “Felony murder, against the officer [Garrett Rolfe] who fatally shot Rayshard Brooks” (Progress Report, 18 June): “San Francisco Police Turned Off Body Cameras Before Illegal [10 May 2019] Raid on Journalist [Bryan Carmody]” (SFchronicle.com, 20 June); “Tulsa motel guard’s [Christopher Straight] deadly encounter with guest [Carlos Carson] raises issues of race, private-security oversight” (MSN.com, 23 June); “9 Police Departments and Multiple Infractions for One New Jersey Cop [Ryan Dubiel, 31]” (NYT, 24 June); “Three North Carolina Police Fired for Racist Rants, Threats to Kill Black People” (TruthOut, 25 June). But reforming the police doesn’t seem as straight forward as just arresting bad cops: “Protesters Demanded Police Reform – Minnesota Lawmakers Left without Passing a Bill” (NYT, 21 June); “Minneapolis council members calling to defund police … receiving death threats” (Fox, 28 June).

FRONT PAGE – WORLDWIDE GEORGE FLOYD PROTESTS AGAINST RACISM & POLICE BRUTALITY, BLACK LIVES MATTER, COVID-19

World Media – Synthesis Based on the Analysis of All 1 June 2020 to 15 June 2020 Entries

Although Israel is getting ready to annex all of the West Bank (“Germany’s FM [Heiko Maas] warns Israel against West Bank annexation plans”, Al Jazeera) and China is experiencing a new COVID-19 outbreak (“Beijing district in ‘wartime emergency’ after virus spike shuts market”, CNBC), the real international news was the worldwide George Floyd protests against racism and police brutality — “Protests over death of George Floyd, police killings spread to London, Berlin, Toronto” (WP) — that even made Trump retreat into his bunker — “Trump Retreats to Bunker as Uprisings Intensify” (TruthOut). But the police didn’t seem to be learning quickly: “Facing Protests Over Use of Force, Police Respond with More Force” (NYT).

Coming out of his bunker, Trump ordered a major “photo op” that went bad: “As Trump Calls Protesters ‘Terrorists,’ Tear Gas Clears a Path for His Walk to a Church” (NYT), to wave a “Bible”, reportedly upside down. The response was immediate and rather negative: “Facebook Employees Stage Virtual Walkout to Protest Trump Posts” (NYT); “The Answer to Police Violence Is Not ‘Reform’ – It’s Defunding” (Guardian); “Police chief [of Houston, Art Acevedo] to Trump: ‘Please, keep your mouth shut if you can’t be constructive'” (CNN); “Louisville fires its police chief [Steve Conrad] over handling of fatal shooting during protest” (CNN).

Things continued to get worse: “Facebook Engineer Publicly Resigns Over Zuckerberg’s Handling Of Trump Posts” (Forbes); “We are Teetering on a Dictatorship – Open your eyes, America” – CNN host Don Lemon (Progress Report); “As Trump Threatens to Send Military Into Cities, Some GIs Refuse to Comply” (TruthOut); “Defense Secretary [Mark Esper] breaks with Trump on invoking Insurrection Act” (CNN); “DC Mayor Bowser unveils ‘Black Lives Matter Plaza’ near White House” (Fox).

In this tense situation, significant administrative actions started to take place: “Move to Defund Police Gains Support Nationwide” (Common Dreams); “Cutting $100 Million-$150 Million From LAPD Budget, Funds To Be Reinvested In Communities Of Color” (Deadline); “All four officers involved in the death of George Floyd will now face criminal charges” (Progress Report); “Cuomo applauds suspension of Buffalo cops who knocked down 75-year-old man” (CNBC); “More than 280 former senior national security officials condemned Trump’s militarized response” (Progress Report); “Breaking With AFL-CIO, Affiliated Labor Council May Vote to Expel Police Union” (TruthOut); “Minneapolis Will Dismantle Its Police Force, Council Members Pledge” (NYT).

Trump apparently realized that a tidal wave of opposition could drown him and did what was necessary to survive — “Trump Orders Troops to Leave DC as Former Military Leaders Sound Warning” (NYT) — but the bad news continued to arrive: “Black Deaths at the Hands of Law Enforcement Are Linked [geographically] to Historical Lynchings” (Atlantic); “Activists Catalog Nearly 600 Videos of Officer Violence Against Protesters” (Common Cause); “Video Shows Cops Slashing Tires Across Minneapolis During George Floyd Protests” (Reason); “The New York State Senate voted today to allow the public to access the disciplinary records of police officers” (Progress Report). Even Facebook as feeling the pressure: “‘Morally Impossible’: Some Advertisers Take a Timeout From Facebook” (NYT).

The bad news for the police continued: “Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo announced that his department would withdraw from contract negotiations with the police union” (Progress Report); “‘Defund the police’ is a call to imagine a safer America – We should answer it” (Editorial Board WP); “Black Lives Matter Movement in Seattle Occupies Six-Block ‘Autonomous Zone'” (Common Dreams); “Atlanta erupts after Rayshard Brooks death prompts police chief to step down” (Fox); “New footage shows cop ignore pleas to intervene in George Floyd’s death” (NYP); “Outrage over video showing police macing child at Seattle protest” (Guardian).

And at the same time, the coronavirus is showing Trump and his allies that they got it wrong: “19 states see rising coronavirus cases and Arizona is asking its hospitals to activate emergency plans” (CNN); “Florida sees 2 consecutive days of 2,000-plus new COVID-19 cases as more beaches reopen” (ABC); “Trump Rally-Goers Required to Agree Not to Sue If They Contract COVID-19” (Common Dreams). Little wonder that “Trembling Trump struggles to lift a glass of water and walk down ramp” (NTDN), or is it his use of Hydroxychloroquine that is now showing its effects?

JANUARY 2020 – THE ESSENTIAL TEXTS
Qassim Suleiman Assassination, Trump-Ukraine Scandal
& Trump Impeachment

by

Karl M. van Meter
(CMH-ENS, karl.vanmeter@ens.psl.eu)

Based on the co-occurrence of keys words in texts approach, and our representative corpus of over 2,000 press reports from January 2020, the Calliope system of analysis has produced the January 2020 Strategic Diagram below with its eight clusters: “Iran” and “Ukraine” in the first quadrant (above and to the right); “Impeachment” and “Sanders” in the second quadrant (above and to the left); “China” and “Republican” in the third quadrant (below and to the left); and “State” and “Killed” in the fourth quadrant (below and to the right).

Each cluster is analyzed below with a diagram showing internal ties between the key words, and tables showing the strength of internal (inside the cluster) and of external (outside the cluster) ties. Using the analytical system’s measures, we also provide in the sub-section “Top Texts” a few of the more important and often characteristic texts of the cluster: the “Texts That Really Matter”.

As you can see, this analysis reveals the central theme or topic of each cluster and its texts, when such a theme or topic exists, which is not always the case as with the “State” and “Killed” clusters that cover several topics or events. Thus, the dominant “Iran” cluster concerns Trump’s decision to have senior Iranian general, Qassim Suleiman, assassinated, and the second dominant cluster, “Ukraine”, concerns Trump’s attempted extortion of Ukraine to obtain information on Joe Biden and his son.

The “Sanders” cluster is clearly about Bernie Sanders and the Democratic presidential primaries. The “Impeachment” cluster concerns the beginning of the Trump impeachment in the House of Representatives. “China” concerns the beginning of the coronavirus epidemic. The “Republican” cluster concerns the Republican blocking of the Senate impeachment trail of Trump. The “State” cluster covers divers legislative activity in several different States of the United States of America. The “Killed” cluster covers such divers events as the massive Australian wildfires, plane crashes and police shootings.

After hours of hearing the damning evidence of Trump’s guilt – and no coherent arguments in his defense – Republican senators STILL blocked eleven amendments to subpoena witness testimony and documents.
